Egyptian authorities have initiated extensive cleaning measures at the pyramids and other critical historical sites. This decision comes as the country fights against the spread of COVID-19, with tourist attractions currently experiencing a significant drop in visitors.

The iconic Giza pyramids, which usually draw around 15 million visitors annually, are undergoing disinfection and sterilization processes. Notably, the monuments themselves remain untouched during this effort.

In the past few weeks, Egypt has closed all museums and tourist attractions to the public, responding to a steady increase in COVID-19 cases, which have nearly reached 500, along with over 20 reported deaths. Several cases appear to be linked to tourism, particularly following the arrival of a cruise ship on the Nile earlier this month.

North Africa has observed a surge in COVID-19 cases in recent weeks; however, Europe and the United States continue to be the primary epicenters of the outbreak.

The novel coronavirus (Covid-19) has escalated into a global pandemic. It is crucial for travelers to stay informed about ongoing developments and health advisories.
