Nairobi in June is an excellent destination to visit. With the high season’s crowds yet to arrive, the May rains have subsided, and the city’s temperatures remain enjoyable. Numerous opportunities exist to immerse yourself in Nairobi’s vibrant cultural scene, from art exhibitions, historical tours to live music, and outdoor yoga. Importantly, it’s also a prime time to enjoy the capital’s major attraction – Nairobi National Park.
Get in the mix at the Koroga Festival
The term koroga translates to ‘mix’ in Kiswahili, perfectly describing this lively music festival that unites a diverse crowd to celebrate African food, music, art, and fashion. Although the festival actually occurs in early July (starting on the 6th), it remains one of the city’s most awaited events, highlighting local talent while hosting international performers as well. Explore boutique market stalls showcasing Afro-chic fashion. Performers’ details will be available on the website. Early bird tickets are KSh1500, while gate tickets are priced at KSh3000.
Find your ‘Ikigai’ in the heart of the city
Ikigai represents a Japanese concept of ‘a reason for being.’ It also serves as the brand name for three of Nairobi’s most beloved hangout spots. These three Ikigai venues, scattered across the city, combine modern coworking spaces with outdoor events that foster a creative community and promote wellness. In June, you can participate in weekly yoga classes on Mondays at 5 PM in their tranquil Westlands garden (KSh750; remember to bring a mat and water bottle). Additionally, do not miss their inaugural guided wine tasting session at the trendy Lavington branch on June 8 (KSh1000).
Delve into Nairobi’s literary past with Book Bunk
For an enlightening look into Nairobi’s landmark public libraries, join a tour with Book Bunk. This social impact initiative, led by the dynamic Angela Wachuka and Wanjiru Koinange, seeks to restore libraries as sites of cultural heritage and public memory. The three-hour tour starts at McMillan Memorial Library, which opened in 1931. Participants will conclude the tour with a stroll through Kaloleni, the historic site where Kenya’s first parliamentary election results were announced in 1963. The tour takes place on June 1 and costs US$35 per person, inclusive of transport and refreshments.
Discover local talent at Circle Art Gallery
To view some of the finest contemporary artistic talent in the region, head to Circle Art Gallery. Renowned as one of the city’s premier exhibition venues, June features two Ethiopian artists, Tegene Kunbi and Robel Temesgen, presenting their work in Nairobi for the first time. This exciting exhibition is curated by Kenyan artist Wanja Kimani and will run from June 5-29.
Get wild at Nairobi National Park
No trip to the city is truly complete without a safari at Nairobi National Park. With the rainy season concluding in May, June presents an optimal time for wildlife viewing. Your best chances of spotting animals, including rhinos and lions, will be during early mornings and late afternoons. Be sure to capture that iconic photograph of wildlife grazing against the city skyline.
