Discover Ari: Bangkok’s Trendy New Neighborhood

Discovering Ari: Bangkok’s Hidden Gem

In a city as chaotic as the Thai capital, finding areas to explore beyond traffic jams and high-rise buildings may seem impossible. However, the leafy suburb of Ari (also called Aree) in Bangkok’s north is an up-and-coming district boasting some cool eating, drinking, and shopping spots to discover.

This once quiet neighbourhood has seen an influx of hip housing with a clientele to match. Home to several government offices, it’s buzzing with a local feel, embodying a mix of old and edgy that represents ‘new’ Bangkok. Here, you can sample a true taste of Bangkok life, with street stalls next to chic cafes and contemporary galleries.

Getting to Ari

First things first – how to get there? On the BTS Sukhumvit line heading north towards Mo Chit (home to one of the world’s largest weekend markets, Chatuchak), Ari station makes arriving in the neighbourhood a breeze. Take exit 3 that leads to Phahon Yothin 7, essentially the backbone of the ‘burb, where the best venues are neatly positioned in quiet soi (small lanes) that run off this main road. Lined with street food stalls, seamstresses, and cobblers, Phahon Yothin 7 features some excellent nighttime dining options. But first, explore the quirky cafes, art galleries, and fashion stores this part of Bangkok has to offer.

Cafes and Boutiques

Take a left down Soi Ari 2 to Dice! Café, known for its extensive collection of board games available to play during your visit. The first floor is dedicated to caffeine consumption – try their signature drink, the coffee affogato with coconut ice cream – along with a menu of Thai dishes, salads, and burgers. The second floor houses a game zone with Game Masters on hand, while the third floor hosts events including film nights, improv classes, and art shows weekly. The top two floors serve as a co-working space popular with locals and expats alike.

Next door, pop into tokyobike, a stylish cycle store showcasing retro-styled two-wheelers. Founded in the Tokyo suburb of Yanaka, these city bikes are designed for bustling streets like Bangkok’s. A few doors down, fashion store Gloc exhibits racks of clothing, jewellery, and accessories from both Thai and international labels, along with beauty brands like Glossier and Anese. Opened by indie-movie actress and fashion writer Patcha Poonpiriya, Gloc is a must-stop for fashion enthusiasts.

Floral Delights and Art

‘Happiness is to hold flowers in both hands’ is the motto at Flower in hand by P. This florist and cake café is ideal for a pit stop in Ari. Here, you can buy a pre-made flower bouquet or arrange your own, then enjoy a drip coffee and a lavender scone. Other sweet delights include edible flower cookies.

On the other (northern) side of Phahon Yothin 7 is Numthong Gallery at Aree (Soi Ari 5). Established in 1997, it has become one of the leading commercial galleries in Southeast Asia. It showcases both emerging and internationally recognized talent, focusing on contemporary art, short films, photography, and mixed media.

Cafes and Nightlife

After exploring, dive into the whitewashed interior at Porcupine Café (Soi Ari 4), a popular coffee hub filled with locals. Savor their cakes-only menu over a White Iced Cube Latte. Alternatively, enjoy the whimsical ambiance at Puritan (Soi Ari 5), which resembles a greenhouse filled with antiquities, adding to its charm. Tea time at Puritan, with desserts prepared by owner Purinat Tantinahtana, is a delightful way to spend an afternoon.

Evening Vibes

As night falls, Ari comes alive, especially in its trendiest venues. Balmy evenings are best spent in the garden of Salt, where an artsy crowd gathers for an international menu, including wood-fired pizzas, complemented by live jazz. A short walk away, Casa Azul, inspired by Frida Kahlo’s home, serves authentic Mexican dishes ranging from classic quesadillas to mangosteen margaritas. For hearty Western fare, Fatbird offers a cozy atmosphere for steaks and pasta. If you’re looking for a quick yet satisfying meal, try the juicy burgers at Paper Butter, adjacent to The Yard hostel – a perfect way to cap off your day exploring Ari.
