Explore Vegan & Vegetarian Dining in Wales
Even though Wales is traditionally known for its lamb, beef, and cheese, it has a fast-growing vegetarian and vegan scene. Here’s our selection of some of the best vegetarian and vegan cafes and restaurants in the country if you’re after a meat-free meal that could win over dedicated carnivores.
Cardiff’s Capital Delights
Anna-Loka
After a stint of crowdfunding, Anna-Loka became Cardiff’s first fully vegan restaurant back in 2015. It set the standard for other dining spots that followed, but few have menus that match Anna-Loka’s creativity and passion. Knockout options include succulent seitan burgers paired with dirty fries, wholesome bowls loaded with grains, raw greens, pulses, and nutty dressings, unbeatable breakfasts (including hearty fry-ups and pancake stacks), and full roast dinners. While it might not be the cheapest, the outstanding flavors, skillful preparation, and beautiful presentation make it worth every penny.
Vegetarian Food Studio
Located just a 10-minute walk from Cardiff Central train station is the city’s best authentic Asian restaurant, catering to vegetarians, vegans, and possibly even omnivores. Vegetarian Food Studio is a family-run eatery featuring a vast menu with nearly 100 dishes, including dosa, paneer and tofu curries, dal, saucy curries, and dry curries—all vegetarian and priced affordably. Large appetites are definitely advised!
Crumbs Kitchen
For over 30 years, Crumbs has served as a haven for hungry herbivores in Cardiff city center. The humble exterior translates inside to a relaxed atmosphere, while the food consistently hits the spot. A classic order is the supersized salad bowl, consisting of six different nutritious salads. All of Crumbs’ hot food is vegan, from the curries to the soups, and their vegan cakes provide a delightful sweet finish to any meal.
Café Atma
At the top of Queen Street in central Cardiff, Café Atma, run by Hare Krishna volunteers, brings light, flavor, and tranquility to a bustling part of the city filled with chain coffee houses. The hot menu includes pies, curries, burgers, wraps, and Indian snacks, alongside a rotating selection of sweet vegan treats like peanut butter cups and red velvet cake. A small shop allows you to stock up on eco-friendly products and literature, and they occasionally host yoga and meditation sessions.
Elsewhere in Wales
Plum Vanilla Cafe, Narberth
This friendly Pembrokeshire café offers surprisingly good vegetarian and vegan options, reflecting the locality’s emphasis on organic, fair trade, and locally-sourced food. During chilly days, their hearty soups (usually vegan) and tagine are quite popular, while summer calls for a serving of their indulgent vegan Booja Booja ice cream.
Govinda’s, Swansea
Govinda’s reigns supreme amongst Swansea’s limited number of veggie-friendly restaurants. Situated in a converted house on Cradock Street, it is easy to overlook unless you’re in the know. Once found, diners can enjoy freshly cooked curries, flavorful seitan cheeseburgers, savory Indian snacks, and creamy vegan cheesecake. During the week, there’s a £5 all-you-can-eat menu available from 3 PM to 5 PM for those mid-afternoon cravings.
Voltaire, Bangor
In Wales’ oldest city, Bangor, known for Penrhyn Castle and the Menai Suspension Bridge, there’s a standout 100% vegan restaurant called Voltaire. This cozy spot serves contemporary dishes in a quaint old cottage setting, offering a wide variety of options, from healthy Buddha bowls to vegan fish and chips and burgers. Be sure to indulge in their caramel sundae for dessert before taking a leisurely stroll around town.
