iBestTravel readers chose Udaipur, India, as their favorite city in Asia in the 2018 World’s Best Awards.
Every year for the World’s Best Awards survey, iBestTravel asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated cities based on their sights and landmarks, culture, cuisine, friendliness, shopping, and overall value.
Why Udaipur Stands Out
Long considered a must-see in India — alongside major metropolises such as New Delhi, Mumbai, and Jaipur — this Rajasthani city has preserved its charming past. Its smaller scale makes Udaipur a memorable place to visit, characterized by ornate palaces, narrow winding streets, boutique jewelry stores, and bustling markets. Consequently, these attributes have made it a favorite among iBestTravel readers.
The City of Lakes
Udaipur is renowned as the City of Lakes. Renting a rowboat and exploring the serene waters is one of the city’s most iconic activities. Moreover, those intrigued by cinematic history should consider a stay at the luxurious Taj Lake Palace, which was voted one of the Top 10 Asia resort hotels by readers this year. Additionally, this hotel was famously used as Octopussy’s Floating Palace in the 1983 James Bond film.
Architectural Wonders
Architecture and history enthusiasts should not miss the City Palace. Initiated in 1553 and taking over 300 years to complete, the palace showcases a stunning blend of Rajasthani, Mughal, and British architectural styles. However, it’s the antiques and artwork within that often leave a lasting impression on visitors. Be sure to explore the City Palace Museum and Durbar Hall, the royal reception area, adorned with a mesmerizing collection of crystal chandeliers.
Sunset Views at Sajjan Garh
Sajjan Garh, also featured in Octopussy, may not be as opulent as the City Palace, yet it remains worth a visit. This late-19th-century palace has seen better days but still attracts visitors eager for fantastic sunset views. If you’re looking for a more leisurely option, taking the Udaipur Ropeway (cable car) provides stunning vistas of the city from above without exerting too much effort.
