Europe’s Best Islands: Unique Gems Await
Europe’s islands are as distinct as its countries. They range from large and lush to small and rocky, uninhabited and densely populated— each island offers its own unique charm.
Every year, for our World’s Best Awards survey, readers rate various travel experiences globally, covering the best hotels, resorts, cities, cruise lines, spas, airlines, and more. Specifically, readers evaluate islands based on natural attractions, beautiful beaches, diverse activities, delicious food, friendly locals, and overall value.
This Year’s Highlighted Islands
This year’s top 10 islands feature a strong Greek presence. Iconic islands such as Crete, Mykonos, and Santorini have ranked highly for 16 consecutive years. However, the often-overlooked Ionian Islands—excluding Corfu—also shine in this year’s rankings. Moreover, Madeira, located about 400 miles off the coast of Morocco, received high praise from readers for its dramatic landscapes, rich culture, fascinating history, and exceptional wines. As one survey respondent noted, “It’s different from any island I’ve been to; it leaves a mystical, magical feeling in the air.”
Key Changes in Rankings
The most significant news this year is that Ischia, a mountainous Italian island near Naples known for its vineyards and natural thermal baths, has dethroned Santorini after five consecutive years in the top spot, placing it at No. 2.
