Explore Noord: Amsterdam’s Trendiest Neighborhood Guide

Discover Amsterdam Noord: A Creative Hotspot

From shipping hub to creative quarter, the ever-changing Amsterdam Noord neighbourhood has cemented itself as one of the coolest spots in the Dutch capital. With the new Noord/Zuid metro line providing quick access, this once obscure ‘hood is gaining traction as the innovative hotspot of Amsterdam.

Separated from the rest of the city by the IJ river, Noord’s industrial warehouses and residential areas can feel a world away from the famous Golden Age canals and crooked, dollhouse-like buildings. However, what the neighbourhood might lack in quaint charm, it makes up for in edge and excitement.

Noord boasts a maritime heritage dating back to the 1600s, but after shipbuilding declined in the 1980s, the industrial parts of Noord fell into disrepair. Consequently, the area attracted squatters and artists in the 1990s, leading to the inevitable influx of hipsters and creative industries.

Fast forward two decades, and Noord has transformed into a ‘place to be’ where there’s always a new hotspot drawing in crowds from all over the city. The recently opened Noord/Zuid metro line provides a fast link to central Amsterdam and is amplifying the area’s appeal to both residents and visitors alike.

Industrial Chic

One of the best representations of Amsterdam’s shipbuilding legacy is NDSM Wharf. Hop aboard the free ferry from Amsterdam Centraal Station, and you’ll feel as if you’ve docked in a completely different city.

The Faralda Crane Hotel, a trio of suites perched atop an industrial crane, dominates the skyline. At ground level, locals make their monthly pilgrimage to IJ Hallen, one of Europe’s biggest flea markets spread across a huge warehouse area. With an entrance fee of €5, this market offers everything from dusty antiques to bikes. After perusing the stalls for unique finds, visitors can take a short stroll to the iconic Pllek restaurant and bar, which is constructed from shipping containers and features a man-made pebble beach. It’s especially popular in summer, hosting outdoor movie screenings every Tuesday and yoga classes on Sunday mornings.

NDSM Wharf also serves as a vibrant location for festivals, exhibitions, and cultural events. Additionally, the DGTL electronic music festival occurs each spring over three days, attracting music lovers from all walks of life.

Bohemian Vibes

Noorderlicht is arguably the most bohemian spot in Amsterdam. This bar and eatery, set in an impressive greenhouse-like environment, features an outdoor area with stunning river views and regularly hosts live music and festivals.

Further east, visitors will find the sustainable Cafe de Ceuvel, located on a former shipyard site. Crafted from recycled materials, this restaurant serves organic, home-grown, and locally sourced dishes in a cozy setting, making it especially inviting during the summer months.

Craft Beer, Skateboarders, and Tacos

On the east side of Amsterdam Noord, a collection of trendy venues continues to emerge. Oedipus Brewing was among the first in the area, allowing thirsty patrons to sample their signature beers directly from the source. The vibrant taproom is decorated with colorful murals and features beers such as Thai Thai, an early experimental Tripel from the brewery.

Nearby, the SkateCafe combines a casual bar and dining area with a mini skate ramp, reflecting the Noord vibe with its large warehouse space filled with plants and classroom-style furniture.

Feeling hungry after all the excitement? A short walk leads to Coba Taqueria, where guests can savor gourmet small plates like tacos and tostadas, along with delicious cocktails in a laid-back atmosphere.

Eye-Catching Architecture

One of Noord’s most striking buildings is the cutting-edge EYE Film Institute. Its angular, bright white design makes a bold impression from across the river at Amsterdam Centraal Station. Up close, visitors will find exhibition spaces, cinemas, and a light-filled café with riverside views. The A’DAM Tower, contrasting Amsterdam’s low-rise landscape, offers breathtaking city views from its 22-story height. For the adventurous, Europe’s highest swing awaits, swinging out over the edge a dizzying 100 metres above ground.
