The South of Italy boasts breathtaking landscapes, rich history, and incredible cuisine. However, it remains somewhat lesser-known compared to other regions of the Bel Paese. Fortunately, several initiatives are making this stunning area more accessible and popular, such as the Cammino Materano and its newest hiking route.
The Cammino Materano Hike
The Cammino Materano is a hiking project centered around the city of Matera. It comprises six routes that connect Matera to various locations in Southern Italy, spanning the regions of Basilicata, Puglia, and Campania. This project is promoted by local volunteers and businesses, serving as an excellent means to enjoy slow traveling through what was once Magna Graecia while discovering its rich histories and unique characteristics.
Hiking Routes
Currently, the Cammino Materano features one fully operational route and one nearing completion for travelers. The Via Peuceta, which spans 160 kilometers, connects Matera to the city of Bari. It is fully functional, complete with info points, hostels, and maps. Conversely, the Via Ellenica is in its final stages of development. This route will cover 290 kilometers and include fifteen stops, guiding travelers from Brindisi to Matera. It will touch two UNESCO World Heritage Sites—Matera itself and the famous trulli of Alberobello—as well as the Natural Park of Terra delle Gravine.
Support and Certification
Travelers can depend on guides and info points for assistance throughout their journey. Moreover, they are eligible to receive a certificate known as testimonium, which confirms they have walked a minimum of 100 kilometers on the route—an homage to the compostela for the Way of St. James.
