Best Time to Go

Thai Buddhist New Year, otherwise known as ‘Songkran’, is a celebration that locals of all ages eagerly await all year round. On April 13, this metropolitan city shuts down for a three-day holiday. The locals proceed to the streets to have what can only be described as the biggest water festival in the world!

If this sounds adventurous to you, don’t forget to pack your brightest floral shirt and your best water gun! Check out Bangkok’s Silom, a neighborhood where the atmosphere is pumping, the roads are closed off, and the water barrels line the streets.

The easiest way to get there is by hopping on the BTS Skytrain (Silom or dark green line) and following the herds of brightly patterned shirts. Upon exiting the station, you will be greeted with some friendly, splashin’ fun. If having water thrown at you randomly isn’t really your thing, then avoiding most parts of this country at this time of year is probably a wise choice!

FYI: This time of year is HOT, HOT, HOT. In fact, April is known for being the hottest month of the year, so if you are averse to strong heat and humidity, do check out the cooler months of the year.

Throughout January and February, Bangkok proudly presents the very chilled Concert in the Park, starting at 5:30 p.m. every Sunday, where you can enjoy a stunning performance by the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra. Expect to hear plenty of popular classics from big movies, musicals, and pop band heroes. Do as the locals do by taking a blanket or folding chairs, plus your favorite picnic essentials—perfect for soaking up the atmosphere.

November to February are generally cooler months across most parts of Thailand, including Bangkok. However, if you’re planning a trip to the islands from the capital, check the weather carefully. The southern regions are known for getting more rainfall compared to northern areas characterized by three distinct climates.

Things to Know

Bangkok is a massive, bustling city with a population of over 10 million, and its bold colors and vibrant atmosphere stretch across 50 districts, making it impossible to absorb it all in a single trip. With so much to see and do, this city loves an itinerary. However, being ready to veer off the beaten path could yield surprising rewards.

Bangkok’s Soi (streets/alleys) are well known for hidden gems, and being prepared to go with the flow could unveil unexpected delights. Using the BTS Skytrain and MRT rail lines is essential for efficient travel; otherwise, you may find traffic frustratingly jammed, especially during peak hours.

Food lovers will find Bangkok a culinary haven, with an array of hearty and flavorsome dishes to try. Start with these favorites: Khao Soi, Pad Thai, Som Tam, Massaman Curry, Laab, Pak Boong, and Penang Curry. With its unique textures and flavors, don’t be surprised if you fall in love with authentic Thai cuisine.

The Thai people are known for their politeness and respect, often greeting others with a Wai (palms together at the chest and a subtle bow). It is illegal to defame or insult the King or any royal family members, so be mindful of any discussions of His Royal Highness.

To express gratitude, always add khap (for males) or ka (for females) at the end of every statement to gain favor with the locals.

How to Get Around

Bangkok is filled with various transport options, and choosing the right mode is vital.

Trains:

The BTS Skytrain is arguably the most convenient way to reach your destination promptly. With 61 stations across three main lines, this service offers air-conditioned and clean carriages, making it a favored option for locals and tourists alike. The fares start from around $0.45 for one stop, and a Rabbit Card can be purchased for regular use.

Taxis:

Colorful taxis are ubiquitous in Bangkok; however, depending on the time of day, a short journey can take significantly longer due to traffic. Ensure the meter is running before you enter to avoid misunderstandings.

Motorbike Taxis:

This is a popular mode for short distances, especially from train stations as these bikes maneuver through heavy traffic easily. Basic knowledge of Thai is advantageous for communicating your destination.

Tuk-Tuk:

A vibrant cultural experience still prevalent in Bangkok, tuk-tuks are readily available, especially around tourist areas. Expect varying prices and potential for bartering.
