Dobby the Newborn Aardvark: England Zoo Welcomes ‘Harry Potter’ Inspired Addition

Dobby the Aardvark: A New Addition at Chester Zoo

Chester Zoo’s newest addition, an adorable aardvark, was named after a beloved “Harry Potter” character known for being just as cute — Dobby the elf.

Introduction to Dobby

“As soon as we spotted the new baby next to mom, we noticed its uncanny resemblance to the Harry Potter character, Dobby. Therefore, that’s the calf’s nickname for the time being,” explained Dave White, a team manager at Chester Zoo. “However, we won’t know for certain whether it’s male or female for several more weeks until the calf is a little older.”

The adorable newborn was born to parents Oni, an eight-year-old mom, and Koos, a six-year-old dad, on January 4. Aardvarks aren’t typically known for their gentle parenting. Interestingly, “Aardvark parents are notorious for being a little clumsy around their newborns,” according to the zoo.

Newborn Aardvark Nurturing Schedule

To support Dobby, zookeepers have implemented a hand-rearing or newborn nurturing schedule. Consequently, staff are working around the clock to feed the baby every few hours, including throughout the night. Since aardvarks are nocturnal, when Dobby’s parents are exploring and feeding during the night, zookeepers place the newborn in an incubator. This care process will continue for about five weeks.

Global Aardvark Population

Currently, there are only 109 aardvarks residing in zoos worldwide, with 66 of them located in Europe. The aardvark is typically found in sub-Saharan Africa and faces challenges due to habitat loss. Although the aardvark is not classified as endangered, it remains a secretive creature, and scientists have much to learn about it.

Visiting Chester Zoo

Visitors wishing to see Dobby and other amazing animals at Chester Zoo must secure their tickets in advance. Adult tickets are priced at £25.45, while children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. It’s worth noting that children under 2 can enter for free.
