Ibtihaj Muhammad: Exploring the World as an Olympic Fencer in a Hijab – Travel + Leisure Podcast Episode 12

The Inspiring Journey of Ibtihaj Muhammad

If you’ve followed along with the first season of iBestTravel‘s podcast, Let’s Go Together, you’ll know there is not one standard definition of a traveler. Our host, Kellee Edwards, has introduced listeners to a variety of individuals, such as widowed women rediscovering themselves through solo travel, a gay couple finding solace in the National Parks system, and people committed to preserving their native cultures. However, we still have more stories to share.

Meet Ibtihaj Muhammad

On the final installment of season one of Let’s Go Together, Edwards is joined by U.S. Olympic athlete Ibtihaj Muhammad. She is notably the first American Muslim woman to wear a hijab while competing in international games. Named one of Time magazine’s “Most Influential People in the World” in 2016, the same year she earned a bronze medal in fencing at the Rio Olympics, Muhammad is not only an athlete but also a passionate traveler, fashion designer, activist, and the inspiration behind a Barbie doll.

Her Journey into Fencing

In the episode, Muhammad recounts her upbringing in New Jersey as part of a Muslim family, her introduction to fencing in school, and her journey within the sport. She explains, “The opportunity to kind of embark on this journey of fencing, I think really was rooted in the idea that it uniquely accommodated my religious beliefs.” Moreover, she details how the fencing attire, which includes helmets, long pants, and jackets, made her feel accepted and part of a team, allowing her to leave behind societal labels.

A World of Travel Through Sports

Prior to competing in the Rio Olympics, Muhammad, a three-time All American during her college years at Duke, traveled extensively while competing around the globe. “One thing that I love about sport is that it brings so many different people together and offers the opportunity to travel to diverse places,” she shares. Consequently, she emphasizes her admiration for the various cultures encountered in different locations.

Reflections on Identity and Travel

Throughout the episode, Muhammad discusses her Olympic experience in 2016, her transformative 2018 pilgrimage to Mecca, and her experiences being recognized at airports. She highlights her love of travel and the significance of wearing her hijab during her journeys.
