Summary
Introduction to Wonder of the Seas
Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship, is ideal for nervous, first-time cruisers. Taking the maiden voyage on this impressive vessel in April was an absolute must for someone like me, who typically embraces a go-big-or-go-home mentality. Interestingly, despite having never cruised before, I decided to experience this Caribbean sailing for myself.
First-Time Cruising Experience
The journey was initially scheduled for late March 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted these plans, halting the travel industry. Fast-forward almost two years later, I felt prepared to attempt the trip once more on Royal Caribbean’s new 1,188-foot-long ship. What I previously thought I wouldn’t enjoy about cruising turned out to be the highlights of my seven-day experience that traveled from Fort Lauderdale to destinations like Haiti, Puerto Rico, and the Bahamas.
After being grounded for nearly two years, organizing an itinerary seemed overwhelmingly complex. However, Wonder of the Seas made it easier. Passengers were encouraged to download the Royal Caribbean app, which became an essential tool, offering details on activities, a calendar of events, and a breakdown of the various dining options available.
For someone with a notoriously poor sense of direction, navigating a ship of such scale was challenging, especially on the first day. Nevertheless, the ship’s spaciousness contributed to a feeling of ease and relaxation.
During my time aboard, I explored the inviting pool deck—home to 18 decks. Whenever I was in the mood for conversation, I would head to the social areas. However, when I sought tranquility, I found solace in the quiet bar located in Central Park, one of the ship’s eight neighborhoods, adorned with over 20,000 plants. Moreover, the Bionic Bar featured robotic bartenders ready to serve signature cocktails, which added an innovative touch to the dining experience.
I also often lounged in the Solarium, an adults-only area boasting stunning views of the sea. Unquestionably, this serene space was one of the best places to unwind.
Remarkable Dining Experience
As for dining, my meals alternated between casual restaurants with attentive staff and the main dining area featuring a buffet style of service—safely managed by masked and gloved employees. By the second day, we had grown accustomed to the cheerful reminders to “washy washy before yummy yummy,” ensuring proper hygiene before entering the dining hall.
The culinary offerings were commendable. Over the course of the week, I indulged in escargot at least three times because it was simply too delicious. However, despite typically not enjoying French toast, I couldn’t resist a PB&J stuffed version at the ship’s Southern-themed restaurant, The Mason Jar, which continues to linger in my thoughts.
Conclusion on Cruising
Initially, I struggled to understand the allure of cruising, especially when I encountered seasoned travelers. However, over the week, I came to appreciate the convenience of planned yet flexible itineraries. The experience of waking up each morning in a new destination, without the hassles of lodging or luggage, resonated deeply with me. Consequently, I now grasp the appeal and am genuinely looking forward to my next cruise on this revolutionary ship.
