Top 10 Scenic Road Trips Across Europe

Top European Road Trips

From the U.K. to Italy, here are 10 of the best European road trips. Sometimes a road trip is simply a means to reach a destination; however, often the road itself becomes the destination. Scenic views that would otherwise vanish if you were flying above or quickly passing by on a train can be savored at your own pace. For the best experience on European road trips, it’s essential to take it slow and relish each moment of your journey.

The Joys of Driving Through Scenic Landscapes

Having the freedom of a car allows you to stop whenever and wherever you wish, giving you the chance to discover hidden gems that make your trip truly unforgettable. My preferred way to approach a road trip is to spend time at a destination before incorporating a day or two of driving into the itinerary. Alternatively, you may choose to dedicate your entire vacation to the journey itself, spending a night or two in various towns along the way.

Tips for Car Rental in Europe

Before embarking on your European road trip, there are several practicalities to keep in mind. Major car rental companies, including Avis, Hertz, and Budget, often have offices located at airports, train stations, and in city centers. Make sure to reserve your vehicle well in advance to ensure availability.

Most cars rented in Europe have manual transmissions, although automatic options can be found at a higher cost. Therefore, it’s wise to choose an automatic if you’re not comfortable shifting gears, especially in unfamiliar settings. This is particularly significant in the U.K., where vehicles are right-hand drive and travel on the left side of the road.

Check if you require an International Drivers Permit (IDP) before your journey. In addition to the IDP, bring your state-issued driver’s license and passport. Many countries stipulate the IDP is necessary. Acquiring one via mail can take a few weeks, so plan accordingly. It’s also advisable to confirm your rental car coverage with your insurance provider and credit card company, and to consider accepting rental company insurance for peace of mind.

Navigation and GPS Solutions

Driving in Europe has become more convenient with GPS devices and smartphone applications. You no longer need the cumbersome paper maps, although having a physical map for an overview can be beneficial in terms of planning your route and noting significant cities along the way.

Useful tools such as Google Maps, Waze, and Here We Go provide excellent guidance, and offline maps can be downloaded for easy access when connectivity is limited. If you are concerned about internet availability, data costs, or battery life on your phone, consider renting a GPS device that has the specific country’s maps downloaded prior to your departure.

Your opportunity to drive on the notorious Autobahn awaits. The one-way journey can take around five to six hours depending on your speed. Start heading south out of Berlin on the A-9; you can choose to drive straight through or stop along the way.

It’s worth noting that speed limits exist in certain zones, displayed on electronic signage that can change according to traffic conditions. In other areas, speed limits are more of a suggestion. Always remain in the right lane, as the left lane is primarily for overtaking. If a faster vehicle approaches, you will likely receive a signal in the form of headlights flashing.

Leipzig makes an ideal halfway point to explore and rest for the night. Rich in history and culture, it embraces both the old and the contemporary with delightful dining options. Spend at least a day in Munich, Bavaria’s capital, where you can wander through its historic buildings, enjoy its restaurants, and partake in a beer garden experience.
