There’s no need to hop south of the border for powdery white sands or exceptional scuba diving. The town of Mexico Beach, Florida, is a hidden gem on the Gulf of Mexico, boasting small-town charm and untouched sands. However, it is unlikely to stay hidden for much longer. According to Airbnb data from Q1 2022, Mexico Beach has become one of the top-searched domestic travel destinations for summer among U.S. travelers.

Mexico Beach appeals to fans of cozy, small towns. Located about a 45-minute drive east of Panama City, the town has a population of approximately 1,060 people, according to the 2020 census. On the streets, you’ll find quaint mom-and-pop shops instead of the chain stores that dominate Florida’s larger cities. Furthermore, as you drive around, you’ll notice there are no traffic lights, allowing for uninterrupted travel to the beach.

Moreover, you’ll likely want to get to the beach quickly. The sand at Mexico Beach is a geological rarity, consisting of just one type of quartz crystal. It’s a point of local pride that the sands are powdery soft and remain cool, even during the hottest summer months.

If you happen to overheat on the sands, make sure to take a dip in the water to cool off. The Mexico Beach Artificial Reef Association has been constructing and maintaining artificial reef systems in the area since 1997. Consequently, if you opt for scuba diving or snorkeling around Mexico Beach’s reefs, you’re likely to encounter a vibrant array of marine life, including snapper, mackerel, as well as turtles, jellyfish, and starfish.

When you’re hungry, don’t miss out on the local seafood, which is the town’s culinary specialty. Two of the most popular eateries in the area are Killer Seafood and Mango Marley’s, where the fish tacos are highly recommended.

Mexico Beach is a cherished destination year-round, but one of its highlight events occurs on New Year’s Eve. The town uniquely sits right on the divide between Eastern and Central time zones. Therefore, each year, the town hosts a “New Year’s Eve Celebrate Twice” event in collaboration with neighboring Port St. Joe. The celebrations begin in Port St. Joe, and subsequently, after midnight, participants take a free shuttle back to Mexico Beach to ring in the new year not once, but twice.
