Experience Comfort with Amtrak’s Private Sleeper Rooms

Idyllic Travel by Rail

Traveling by rail is one of the most idyllic ways to experience the beauty of the countryside. Picture yourself enjoying stunning natural scenery as you sip on a steaming cup of tea. However, the reality can sometimes be less than romantic.

Avoiding Nonoptimal Scenarios

As with any public transportation, Amtrak travelers may find themselves seated next to snorers, fussy youngsters, or those who indulge in strongly scented meals. Fortunately, Amtrak offers a private room option that allows travelers to avoid these less-than-ideal situations altogether.

Private Accommodations on Amtrak

More than a dozen Amtrak routes across the U.S. feature private accommodations. These rooms are located in the Sleeping Car and range from “roomettes” to full family bedrooms. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect:

  • Roomettes: The most economical option with two seats that convert into upper and lower berths by night.
  • Standard Bedrooms: Double the space of roomettes, complete with an in-room sink, restroom, and shower.
  • Bedroom Suites: Equipped with two sinks, restrooms, and showers.
  • Family Bedrooms: Accommodate four passengers with two upper and lower berths.

These private rooms also come with amenities such as free WiFi, a personal window for scenic views, complimentary meals, lounge access, and turn-down service. Amtrak features two types of Sleeping Cars: Superliner, which offers a two-level design, and Viewliner, featuring a single level. The type available depends on your selected route.

Understanding Cost

Although the price of Amtrak’s private rooms is on the higher side, many passengers consider the additional expense worthwhile for the privilege of enjoying the picturesque sights of places like Glacier National Park or the Grand Canyon from their own private window (on the Empire Builder line and Southwest Chief line, respectively). Moreover, during the fall, the Capitol Limited line offers awe-inspiring views of autumn foliage as it journeys from the East Coast to Chicago, all while you relax in your personal space.

Pricing for roomettes can range from $400 to $2,500 for a round-trip ticket between major cities, depending on the route, with costs for private rooms increasing accordingly. Accessible rooms are available and include room service, enhancing the travel experience for all guests.
