Are you adventurous enough?
Exploring the gorgeous fjords, arctic regions, and buzzing cities of Norway sounds like a dream — but what if it was all a mystery? That’s what one tour operator is proposing: mystery trips to the Scandinavian country where travelers don’t know what they’re doing until they get there.
Up Norway, known for planning immersive trips throughout the country, encourages travelers to simply show up while they curate an amazing vacation that is all a surprise. Although the details remain undisclosed beforehand, the trips are tailored according to guests’ preferences, interests, and desired vacation style.
“Rooted in the Norwegian concept of blåtur, meaning ‘into the blue,’ travelers are increasingly willing to embrace the idea of a surprise getaway,” said Torunn Tronsvang, founder and CEO of Up Norway. “Previously, Norwegians often relied on friends or family to plan spontaneous trips, but now, international travelers are also looking for that trusted guidance, especially after varying levels of lockdown over the last two years.”
Up Norway’s mystery trips start at $2,300 per person for a five-night adventure, potentially including stays in a treetop cabin deep within the Finnskogen forest, visits to a reindeer sanctuary, or cruising through the breathtaking Hjørundfjord.
However, it’s not all up to chance: prior to the adventure, participants complete a digital questionnaire and meet virtually with an Up Norway trip specialist. This discussion encompasses travel dates, personal interests, and — most importantly — budget. They inquire about preferences ranging from the type of travel desired (be it relaxing, luxurious, culturally immersive, or family-oriented) to activity interests and accommodation levels.
The Up Norway team not only plans the itinerary meticulously but also provides guidance on what clothing to pack for the trip. However, if travelers are eager to learn about their plans ahead of their journey — although waiting until arrival is highly recommended — they can request details about the itinerary.
Presently, Norway embraces travelers from around the globe, including the United States, with no COVID-19-related travel restrictions, according to the Tourism Board of Norway. All testing, quarantine, and masking measures were lifted in February.
