New Europe Travel Fee Implemented in 2025: Costs and Details Revealed

American travelers heading on a European vacation will soon have to pay up thanks to a new fee to be implemented next year.

Introduction to ETIAS

The €7 fee ($7.42), which is expected to go into effect in November 2023, will apply to foreign visitors aged 18 to 70 as part of the new European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS). This system is designed to enhance security and regulate travel across borders within the Schengen area, according to the European Commission.

Fee Implementation Details

Travelers will need to apply for the ETIAS authorization through an official website or app before embarking on their journey. This fee is aimed at facilitating travel while ensuring safety and security.

Authorization Process

Most travelers applying for ETIAS authorization will be approved within minutes. However, in approximately 5% of cases, applicants may encounter delays, as their authorization could take up to 30 days to process.

The ETIAS authorization will be mandatory for entry into all Schengen countries and will remain valid for three years or until the expiry of the traveler’s document.

Border guards will check the ETIAS authorization alongside other travel documents, such as a passport.

Comparison with ESTA

The ETIAS authorization bears similarity to the United States’ Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), which serves travelers from countries benefiting from the Visa Waiver Program. Recently, ESTA fees increased from $14 to $21, according to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Easing of Travel Restrictions in Europe

Currently, travel to Europe is becoming more convenient as several nations are lifting pandemic-related entry requirements. Countries such as Italy, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Iceland, Ireland, and Croatia are among those easing restrictions, making travel more accessible.
