Top-Rated New Hampshire Inn Crowned Best Resort in New England

History of Pickering House Inn

When Patty and Peter Cooke acquired the Pickering House over five years ago, their intention was to preserve the historic property in their hometown of Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. By combining Patty’s expertise in renovation and construction with Peter’s background in commercial real estate management, they transformed it into a captivating passion project, officially opening the Pickering House Inn in 2018.

Accolades and Guest Experience

Guests quickly recognized the heart and soul the Cooke family invested in the boutique hotel, leading to immediate accolades. This year, the hotel secured three prestigious acknowledgments in iBestTravel‘s 2022 World’s Best Awards: No. 1 for best New England resort hotels, No. 1 for best continental U.S. resort hotels, and No. 4 for best hotels in the world.

“We are so honored that our guests took the time to share their experiences and that we are ranked among the most exceptional properties in the world,” Patty expressed. “A recent guest mentioned they have traveled extensively and described their stay at the Pickering House Inn as ‘nothing short of magnificent.’ Testimonials like this validate our efforts and highlight the dedication of our exceptional staff.”

Culinary Offerings

The 10-room luxury property, referred to locally as “The Yellow House,” was built in 1813 for businessman Daniel Pickering and is situated near Lake Winnipesaukee. In addition to its luxurious accommodations, the Cookes have curated a distinctive dining experience. They have designed the Gathering Kitchen, a space where breakfast is served as well as snacks and spirits for guests, crafted from the wood of a 150-year-old maple tree that once stood on the property.

The Cookes have also introduced a separate Barn at Pickering House Inn, which hosts Innkeeper’s Suppers—community dinners with a set menu for 64 guests—and a Restaurant Roadshow series designed to support chefs recovering from pandemic closures, ultimately showcasing New Hampshire’s culinary talent.

As they continue to evolve the Pickering House Inn, the Cookes remain focused on offering guests the experience they seek. Patty highlights the importance of creating various spaces for guests to relax and socialize, noting, “Whether you wish to meet new friends or enjoy a quiet moment with a good book, we ensure a welcoming environment catering to diverse preferences.”
