Discover North Island, Seychelles

It truly doesn’t get more beautiful than North Island, Seychelles. At just 1.3 miles long and located approximately 18 miles away from the mainland, North Island, Seychelles, might easily be overlooked. However, its true ecological value has recently come to light.

In 2019, The Luxury Collection, which is part of Marriott International, Inc., announced the addition of North Island to its portfolio. More recently, ASmallWorld Hospitality assumed management, further enhancing the destination’s appeal.

History and Conservation Efforts

North Island, also known as Ile du Nord, was the first Seychelles island to have a recorded landing by seafarers in 1609. Initially, it was known for its large population of giant land tortoises. Between 1826 and the 1970s, it was owned by the Beaufond family from Réunion and served as a farm, producing fruit, spices, guano, fish oil, and copra. After falling into disuse, it was purchased in 1997 to be transformed into a private island hideaway and a sanctuary for native Seychellois wildlife.

“North Island is a fertile paradise — the perfect setting for our Noah’s Ark conservation and island rehabilitation program,” the official website notes. “The natural beauty of North Island will touch and inspire you at the deepest level.”

To restore the island’s natural beauty, conservation efforts included the eradication of non-native rodents and feral animals, removal of invasive plant species, and the planting of native flora. As a result, it has regained its status as one of the most pristine locations on Earth.

According to the island, species such as Seychelles blue pigeons, wedge-tailed shearwaters, and white-tailed tropicbirds have returned, while both hawksbill and green turtles have begun nesting on the beaches again. This thriving ecosystem offers guests unforgettable opportunities to engage with nature.
