Explore Turkey’s Lakes Region
Ancient City of Kremna
Between the urban vibrance of Istanbul and the relaxing beaches of the Mediterranean lies a different Turkey—one rich in tradition, history, and breathtaking landscapes. The viewpoint from Kremna, located in the western region of Turkey’s rugged Taurus Mountains, offers stunning views that cascade down steep slopes, revealing fields of wheat and barley.
As I approached the site, it became apparent why this ancient city was named “Kremna,” derived from the Greek word “kremnos,” meaning precipice. The silence was profound; the only sounds were the rustle of leaves and the distant calls of birds. As I explored the remnants of archways and columns, I was enveloped by the echoes of history and ancient cultures that once thrived here.
The Ruins of Sagalassos
Turkey’s Lakes Region, once known as Pisidia, is home to significant archaeological sites like Sagalassos. This area remains largely undiscovered by international tourists, despite its rich history and stunning landscapes. I was intrigued by the ancient ruins here, particularly after learning of the Hellenistic influence and Roman presence that has shaped the region.
The Pisidia Heritage Trail, a trekking and camping route, connects numerous ancient cities, including both Kremna and Sagalassos, showcasing the preservation efforts in these historically rich locations.
Cultural Richness of Isparta
Isparta, known as the “rose garden” of Turkey, features stunning landscapes dotted with rose sculptures. Here, farmers cultivate Rosa damascena for oils used in various products. Even though I arrived before the harvest season, the delicate apple blossoms were a sight to behold, showcasing the region’s fruit production.
The local market in Isparta reflects the town’s cultural fabric, where visitors can taste regional specialties. Acclaimed for its hospitality, I was welcomed at Eskiciler Konağı, a beautifully restored mansion that encapsulates the region’s charm.
Exploring Eğirdir
Eğirdir is another remarkable area offering unique experiences. Small beaches, parks, and local eateries create an inviting atmosphere for visitors. I enjoyed the vibrant market, where locals sell everything from fresh produce to handmade crafts. This community spirit reflects the essence of Turkish culture.
Culinary Delights
While traveling through this enchanting region, the food was a highlight. At local restaurants, I sampled delicious dishes, including the famed Burdur şiş (grilled kofta) and the region’s traditional flatbread, Toros pide. The culinary scene not only satisfies the palate but also tells the story of local traditions and practices.
Ultimately, my journey through Turkey’s Lakes Region was transformative, filled with rich history and stunning landscapes. This hidden gem of Turkey deserves recognition from both local and international travelers eager to explore its ancient roots and vibrant culture.
