1. Overview
An adults-only retreat in Western Montana promises spectacular scenery, a roster of adventure activities—and a world-class culinary experience.
2. The Green O Experience
It was almost midnight as we wound along a country road, moonlight flickering on the Blackfoot River and the mountains silhouetted against the glow. For a moment, the peaks gave way to plains, revealing Big Sky Country, then back into a dense forest until the pines parted and we pulled up to the green o, an adults-only luxury retreat in Montana.
The pleasure of this getaway lies not merely in the over-the-top luxury of the experience but in how dramatically it contrasts with the surroundings. An elegant multicourse meal in a city hotel feels indulgent; serve that same meal in the backcountry and it becomes downright miraculous. The magic of the green o, a high-style outpost within the 37,000-acre grounds of the Resort at Paws Up, just under an hour’s drive from Missoula, is captivating.
3. Luxurious Accommodations
Paws Up has gained a reputation as a high-end all-inclusive retreat; however, the green o elevates indulgence further, catering to couples seeking a romantic escape while offering the all-inclusive activities in a refined atmosphere. The property’s 12 standalone houses are scattered along a wooded hillside surrounding Social Haus, the green o’s bar, restaurant, and central gathering space.
4. Unique Suite Layouts
Each of the four distinct suite layouts offers unique features:
- Tree Haus: Elevated on stilts, it gazes over the treeline.
- Green Haus: Features a living roof that doubles as a deck and a skylight above the bed for stargazing.
- Light Haus: Boasts an alcove of floor-to-ceiling windows on three walls.
- Round Haus: Its curvilinear layout immerses guests in nature.
All suites are equipped with dreamy amenities: outdoor hot tubs, multiple fireplaces, porch swings, and enormous soaking tubs. On the first morning of my stay, I enjoyed coffee on the porch swing of my Round Haus, felt certain there was no nicer way to start the day.
5. Exceptional Culinary Offerings
Then I ventured to Social Haus for breakfast—a highlight of the experience. The culinary program, led by executive chef Brandon Cunningham and James Beard Award-nominated pastry chef Krystle Swenson, offers one of the most exciting hotel dining experiences anywhere in the U.S.
Breakfast that first morning included delicate ricotta beignets and a whipped omelet stuffed with foraged mushrooms, signaling the start of a culinary adventure. Dinner was an eleven-course tasting menu filled with playful, seasonal dishes where Cunningham’s creations reflect the local setting, incorporating largely local ingredients and live-fire cooking.
6. Adventurous Activities
However, there are plenty of activities beyond dining. The green o functions as a standalone property, but a short drive to the Wilderness Outpost is where most Paws Up activities begin.
With a daytime adventure including a thrilling ATV ride to Lookout Rock, I took in breathtaking views of Montana’s landscape. We also enjoyed a fly-fishing expedition, catching an abundance of trout. This was followed by an engaging cattle drive, which let us experience the thrill of guiding cows through the picturesque Montana landscape.
7. Memorable Experiences
Each evening at Social Haus, we enjoyed magical meals with unique music enhancing the experience. Dining that first night featured signature dishes and delightful surprises. The immersive atmosphere created a unique art experience, showcasing not just culinary excellence but also the natural beauty of the surroundings, culminating in moments of connection with fellow guests as we admired the sunset.
As we stood watching nature’s vibrant display, my husband, often reserved, shared his thoughts with those nearby, exclaiming, “You’ve gotta look outside; the clouds are like brushstrokes!” This moment beautifully encapsulated how the green o inspires connection with both nature and fellow travelers.
