Meet the Service Dog Who Sailed 700 Days on Cruise Ships — Honored by Holland America Line

Joska’s Award Journey

At just 10 years old, Joska was awarded Holland America Line’s highest past-guest award after spending an impressive 700 days aboard cruises.

However, unlike most cruisers who earn the Platinum Medallion, Joska has four legs. This loyal service dog enjoys cruising with her owners, Cornelis and Connie Marinussen, who is legally blind, as shared by the cruise line.

This black Labrador retriever received her honor during the current 150th-anniversary transatlantic crossing on the Rotterdam and has traveled to various destinations, including Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, Europe, and the Caribbean. Since 2014, Joska has embarked on over 50 Holland America cruises.

“Joska is the first service animal to achieve this lofty status, and we wanted to honor her with an event that shows her how special she is to everyone in our company,” stated Holland America Line President Gus Antorcha. “Registered service animals are always welcome aboard Holland America Line ships, and Joska has become a member of our family. Moreover, she brightens the spirits of everyone on board while allowing Connie to pursue her passion for cruising and exploring the world.”

To celebrate Joska’s achievement, a special ceremony was organized where she was presented with a medal and dog-friendly Holland America Line-branded gifts.

Holland America Line’s Policies

Joska’s Dutch owners have been cruising with Holland America since 2013 and have also received their own Platinum Medallions.

Holland America does not permit pets or emotional support animals on board; however, they do welcome registered service animals. For more information on their policies, visit the cruise line’s website.

Traveling with Pets on Cruises

Travelers wishing to bring their pets on board should consider Cunard. This cruise line allows pets to stay in designated kennels during transatlantic crossings, where owners can visit their furry companions.
