Explore Edmonton’s Winter Wonderland
In Canada, known for its stunning landscapes covered in snow and ice, Edmonton embraces the beauty of winter sports. Each year, the vibrant city opens a series of outdoor ice-skating rinks in various parks, inviting locals and visitors to enjoy the frosty delights of the season.
Victoria Park IceWay: A Unique Ice Trail
However, Edmonton’s signature ice experience isn’t merely a rink; it’s the Victoria Park IceWay, which offers a unique, winding trail through the enchanting forest of Victoria Park. This spectacular ice trail extends for just under 2 miles and officially opened for the skating season at the beginning of January.
Located conveniently south of downtown Edmonton along the scenic North Saskatchewan River, the IceWay showcases the tranquility of the park, making skaters feel isolated from the city’s hustle and bustle—especially mesmerizing at night. As darkness envelops the trail, colorful rainbow lights illuminate the path, creating a magical atmosphere for evening skating until the park closes at 10 p.m.
Skating Experience on the IceWay
This captivating ice trail is also adjacent to the Victoria Park Skating Oval, an Olympic-sized, 400-meter oval tailored for speed skating. Skaters can easily transition from the oval to the enchanting IceWay, where on select winter evenings, the nearby Victoria Park Pavilion serves hot chocolate beside a crackling fire.
Vital Facilities for a Comfortable Visit
The Victoria Park IceWay operates daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and is completely free for everyone to enjoy. However, there are no skate rentals available on-site, so remember to bring your own ice skates. If needed, adult skates can be rented from Totem Outdoor Outfitters starting at $25 per day. The Pavilion also features warming amenities, including bathrooms, lockers, a changing area, and scenic views of the Skating Oval. Additionally, a covered picnic space with tables, wood-burning stoves, and a fire pit enhances the outdoor experience.
Other Skating Locations in Edmonton
Moreover, Edmonton boasts a variety of additional skating facilities across its public parks. Notable locations include Castle Downs Park, City Hall Plaza, Hawrelak Park, Jackie Parker, Meadows Community Recreation Centre, and Rundle Park. Notably, Rundle Park features a shorter second ice trail known as the Rundle Park IceWay, which is nearby and provides around a mile of festive trails by an outdoor hockey pond and two skating rinks.
