Rediscover Midcentury Train Travel: 1940s-Inspired Hudson River Trips

1. Vintage Train Travel Experience

2. Unique Features of Hudson River Rail

3. Special Events and Offerings

The dream of stepping back into time to the days of 1940s train travel is becoming a reality thanks to Hudson River Rail.

This year, the company celebrates its 75th anniversary by offering rides on restored railroad cars from 1948. The first departure will begin on February 10, traveling between New York City and Albany, as per the company’s recently announced 2023 schedule.

“Our train runs on the same tracks as those of the 1940s,” Kevin Phalon, Executive Director of the United Railroad Historical Society of NJ, Hudson River Rail Excursions, stated. “In 1948, passengers looked out at the same view that we see 75 years later. It truly is as close to time travel as you can get.”

Tickets will be available from January 20th.

The historic cars were part of the 20th Century Limited, an express passenger train in operation from 1902 to 1967. Travelers departing from Pennsylvania Station’s Moynihan Train Hall will board one of the two historic cars: the Hickory Creek and Tavern Lounge No. 43. The ticket includes lunch, drinks, and stunning views through the panoramic windows.

“The majority of our passengers are millennials seeking unique experiences, but many are also train enthusiasts for whom this trip is a bucket list item. It’s special when older passengers share their stories with younger ones who may not meet otherwise,” Phalon mentioned.

Additionally, the train company is hosting a Valentine’s Day Special from February 10-14. This exclusive trip includes a tasting menu and wine pairings, with prices ranging from $299 to $399 for first-class service on the Tavern Lounge No. 43 and Hickory Creek, respectively.

Train lovers can also book an overnight journey from New York to Chicago in celebration of the Hickory Creek car’s 75th anniversary, priced at $2,500 per person, taking place from September 17-21.
