Introduction to California River Cruises
You might’ve explored Napa by rental car, bus tour, or perhaps even train, but have you considered the unique experience of a river cruise?
The concept of river cruises in California is relatively rare, largely due to limited waterways and environmental factors like droughts. Remarkably, according to American Cruise Lines, it has been nearly 80 years since any river cruises operated in California. However, this scenario is set to change dramatically next month.
Details of the New Itinerary
American Cruise Lines is launching its first-ever California river cruise departing from San Francisco. This exciting journey will encompass the scenic San Francisco Bay, Napa Valley, the Sacramento River, and the San Joaquin River over an eight-day itinerary. Highlights of the excursions include:
- A visit to the Haggin Museum in Stockton
- A delightful honey tasting experience in Sacramento
- Numerous wine tastings throughout Napa Valley
Charles B. Robertson, the president and CEO of American Cruise Lines, stated, “We have long envisioned showcasing San Francisco and the wine country on our riverboats. The California Delta is one of the most picturesque regions in the U.S. to explore by riverboat. Many have visited wine country, but few can say they have cruised through it.”
About the American Jazz Ship
To facilitate this groundbreaking itinerary, American Cruise Lines is repositioning its ship, the American Jazz, from the Mississippi River. This journey involves traversing the Panama Canal and navigating the west coast of Central and North America. Launched in 2021, the ship is capable of accommodating 99 passengers in exclusive all-balcony accommodations.
American Cruise Lines has significantly expanded its operations, doubling its fleet in recent years. With 17 small ships and riverboats serving various regions across the country, they have successfully created diverse new itineraries. Currently, the company operates cruises in 35 states.
The inaugural sailing for the California cruise on American Jazz is scheduled for February 24, with subsequent departures occurring throughout the spring. After a short summer hiatus, sailings will resume in the fall. Rates for an eight-day San Francisco Bay and California river cruise begin at $5,990 per person, providing a premier option for river adventure enthusiasts.
