Discover Schweitzer Mountain: One of America’s Best-Kept Ski Resort Secrets

Discover Schweitzer: A Winter Paradise

“Let’s move here,” my husband says, sliding to a stop halfway down our first run of the day. This statement is amusing, considering we just arrived last night and it’s only 9:30 a.m. However, I share his sentiment. Even with just a few turns under my belt, I can already tell that Schweitzer is a remarkable destination for winter sports enthusiasts.

As the largest ski resort in Idaho and Washington, Schweitzer is nestled in the picturesque Selkirk Mountains, overlooking the charming lake town of Sandpoint. It’s celebrated not only for its exceptional tree skiing and impeccable grooming but also for its breathtaking landscape. Furthermore, Lake Pend Oreille, the largest lake in Idaho, stretches magnificently at the base of the mountains, and on clear days, you can even catch a glimpse of Canada just an hour’s drive away.

Moreover, skiing above the clouds offers a unique experience. From the summit, we see a clear sky with clouds blanketing the valley beneath our feet. After some exhilarating turns, we navigate through a fog that gives way to stunning views and untouched powder from a recent storm. This exclusivity makes Schweitzer stand out; there’s vast terrain allowing everyone to enjoy their space and avoid overcrowding.

“The amount of terrain we have compared to skier visits — it’s still underrated,” mentions Sean Mirus, the marketing and special events director at Schweitzer, who skied alongside us that day. “I can ski more laps here in half a day than at many resorts in a full day.”

This unpretentious vibe is palpable throughout Schweitzer, creating an inviting atmosphere for regular visitors rather than a posh escape for luxury seekers. The ski area has remained independently owned since 1963, situated on private land, which contributes to its unique charm. During my visit, I even spoke with Brandon Moon, a local ski coach and the son of one of the founders, who shared his passion for the area.

How to Ride at Schweitzer

For those looking to hit the slopes, purchasing a full-day lift ticket online and in advance costs $110. If a full day on the mountain isn’t feasible, consider an afternoon half-day ticket for just $45. Additionally, night skiing operates every Friday and Saturday, as well as on select holidays, from 3 to 7 p.m. for $20 with pre-purchase.

With the Ikon Pass, you can enjoy seven days of skiing at Schweitzer, making it an appealing option for avid skiers.

When it comes to dining on the mountain, the Sky House is the top spot. Offering 360-degree views that include glimpses of Washington, Montana, and Canada, this venue features a full-service bar and restaurant on one side and a convenient grab-and-go cafe on the other.

While the Sky House boasts incredible views, The Outback offers a casual atmosphere with nostalgic decor featuring retro skis and snowboards, plus both indoor and outdoor seating options. Guests rave about the smoked brisket here.

In Sandpoint, there are delightful dining options like The Fat Pig known for its rotating tap list and Trinity at City Beach for a more upscale, waterside dining experience.

When consulting with Moon for his top food recommendation, he swiftly replied, “Breakfast or lunch at Joel’s,” a beloved local Mexican restaurant downtown that he assures is the real deal.

Where to Après-Ski at Schweitzer

For those on the hunt for a fancy cocktail, the Crow’s Bench within the Humbird hotel is the perfect choice. Enjoy the ambiance by the fireplace, at the bar, or outside while taking in the views.

To truly experience Schweitzer’s après-ski culture, join the locals who often gather for a casual beer (and maybe some cheesy tater tots) at Pucci’s Pub or grab a slice at Powder Hound Pizza.
