1. Introduction
Benjamin Kahle discovered his love for Merida, Mexico, during his first visit in 2016. The serene atmosphere and stunning architecture left a lasting impression, prompting him to dream of owning a vacation home there someday.
2. Real Estate Journey
Thanks to advantageous timing and smart investments, Kahle was able to realize his dream sooner than expected. As a Los Angeles realtor specializing in historic and architectural properties, he believes that anyone can acquire their ideal vacation home as well.
3. Building Wealth Through Real Estate
Kahle’s journey is an exemplary model of how to navigate the real estate market. Having grown up in Los Angeles, he developed an appreciation for older architecture, including charming Spanish-style duplexes. His strong affinity for historical properties is a trait that he shares with his wife, MiShawn.
4. Initial Investments
MiShawn made her first foray into real estate by purchasing a four-unit building in West Adams for $280,000 in 2001 with a small down payment using an FHA loan. The rental income from this property not only sustained them but also allowed them to save for more significant investments in the future.
5. Discovering Merida
The Kahles often reflected on their experiences in Merida amid the uncertainties of 2020. Their decision to explore life in this picturesque city solidified when they booked one-way tickets in October, embracing a lifestyle filled with local parks and leisurely lunches.
6. Purchasing a Fixer-Upper
Equity from their properties enabled the Kahles to purchase a major fixer-upper in Merida’s Centro neighborhood for $242,000 in 2021. Although renovations are ongoing due to challenges like historic preservation regulations, Kahle is optimistic about completion by the end of the year.
7. Life in Merida
With a population of around 900,000, Merida captivates residents with its beauty and relaxed lifestyle. The Kahles enjoy spending time at Parque de Santa Lucia, tasting local cuisine at restaurants such as KUUK, and savoring sweet corn ice cream from Helados Colon.
8. The Charms of Local Architecture
Ultimately, the architecture of Merida remains Kahle’s favorite aspect of the city. Throughout their renovation, they have uncovered classic Meridian design features like curved archways and central courtyards, reflecting the historical richness of the area.
“These houses are one of the best parts of Merida,” Kahle notes. “They are narrow and long, so a home might be beautiful from the exterior, but that’s only 5 percent of what’s going on. There’s magic behind every door.”
