Family Adventure in Costa Rica: How We Organized a Trip with 17 Members

If you’ve ever traveled to Costa Rica, you’ve likely heard the term pura vida, a country-wide phrase that translates to “pure life” or “simple life.” However, planning a trip with nearly 20 family members is rarely simple.

Last November, 17 of my closest relatives gathered around a dinner table and decided another family trip was necessary. With ages ranging from three to 60 and family members spread across New York, Pennsylvania, and Colorado, this was our first vacation together after the passing of both my grandparents.

While the prospect of such a large group getaway might seem daunting, we created a memorable trip of a lifetime with a few strategic tips and tricks.

1. Understanding ‘Pura Vida’

To start, having one main decision-maker made planning much easier. Uncle Frank took charge, allowing us to share our individual family preferences without multiple opinions complicating the process.

2. Planning Tips for Large Groups

Establishing basic ground rules was crucial. With different families involved, it was essential to have a clear schedule to avoid confusion. Effective communication is paramount when coordinating a group our size.

3. Utilizing Travel Agencies

One small yet significant trick was ensuring everyone had TSA PreCheck, expediting our airport experience. Traveling with almost 20 people magnified the benefits of this advantage.

Moreover, enlisting help from a travel agency proved invaluable. The fabulous staff at Dreams Las Mareas assisted us tremendously. Fort Hill Travel coordinated our stay, flights, and even arranged a bus spacious enough for our family and luggage.

4. Activities at Dreams Las Mareas

We established our destination early on—Costa Rica and Dreams Las Mareas became the ideal setting for our special trip. An all-inclusive resort was essential for managing various budgets and helping everyone enjoy their stay.

At Dreams, numerous activities are available, including cooking classes, kayaking, and hiking. I recommend consulting resort staff to determine the best times for large group dinners to ensure smooth seating arrangements.

5. Balancing Individual Needs

Respecting individual vacation styles is crucial during family trips. We managed to satisfy various interests by splitting up when necessary. For instance, while some family members explored Buena Vista del Rincón with activities like zip-lining and horseback riding, others relaxed by the pool.

6. Capturing Family Memories

If you find yourself as the family photographer, consider creating a group chat or shared photo album. This is a relaxing way to share and enjoy the memories you all created together. You can relive the Costa Rican sunsets and adorable moments without the stress of individual photo distribution.

7. Importance of Self-Care

Lastly, taking personal time during family trips is essential, regardless of group size. Whether enjoying a spa treatment or lounging by the pool, carving out time for self-care can help rejuvenate your spirit, enabling you to enjoy family time more thoroughly.

8. Cherishing Memorable Moments

Ultimately, to successfully pull off a family trip of this magnitude, focus on the little moments. It’s in these small experiences that genuine joy is found, even amid the chaos of organizing travel for 18 people and their luggage. Cherish every memory and the time spent together, as these are the moments that truly matter.

After returning home, check in on your family group chat; you might find it inspiring to start planning your next family adventure. We’re considering a trip for 20 to Thailand.
