Summary
The New Age of Ibiza
Before Ibiza became a party hub, it was celebrated for its relaxed and mystical atmosphere. Recently, the island’s New Age scene has experienced significant growth.
Ibiza has always evoked a duality in emotions: happiness and heartache. For over twenty years, it has been my chosen escape, drawing me back annually—except during the pandemic when I had to remain in London for 18 months. I yearned for the energy of Ibiza, the stunning sunsets, and the vibrant nightlife that filled my evenings with anticipation.
Initially, like many of my peers, I visited Ibiza seeking exhilarating fun during the early 2000s. This period was defined by superclubs and renowned DJs. My first summer was filled with parties and unforgettable moments, including dancing on the beach at dawn. However, the flip side to all the enjoyment was equally severe hangovers, which I often faced the following morning.
The island, known as “La Isla Blanca,” remains uniquely beautiful and unspoiled. Ibiza boasts a splendid combination of vibrant beaches, hidden coves, and lush hills.
The essence of Ibiza is deeply rooted in its rich culture. The island, which became a sanctuary for hippies in the 1960s, transformed into a hedonistic paradise during the ’70s, drawing in crowds eager for nonstop entertainment. Over the decades, the island evolved into Europe’s premiere party location, attracting diverse visitors, from reckless youths to A-list celebrities.
As I explored Ibiza’s evolution, I learned that the impact of the pandemic led to a decline in some of the beloved clubs, previously known for extravagant entrance fees. Consequently, the clientele has changed, with more visitors seeking tranquility over wild nights.
In 2019, I saw the beginnings of a resurgence of its initial hippie culture, showcasing vegan eateries, wellness retreats, and organic farms. Eager to investigate this shift, I traveled to Ibiza with my friend Emily.
We kicked off our adventure at Pikes Ibiza, an iconic hotel known for legendary parties. From its storied past with George Michael to its vibrant pool area, Pikes embodies the spirit of Ibiza, yet offers a more relaxed ambiance than in previous years.
As we enjoyed our evenings, we discovered from industry insiders that patrons have shifted from seeking raucous parties to more serene experiences, emphasizing wellness and relaxation. Moreover, the culinary scene in areas like Santa Gertrudis has flourished, showcasing fresh, health-focused dining options.
At Wild Beets, a popular vegan hotspot, the lunchtime scene buzzed with health-conscious diners. I indulged in a raw lasagna that tantalized my taste buds, marking a refreshing departure from my usual indulgent meals.
As I spoke with culinary experts, it became evident that the expectations of visitors have exceptionally transformed. The past years, particularly due to club shutdowns, led to a focus on high-demand lunch spots that emphasize gourmet dining.
While newer establishments excite the palate, my fondness remains for traditional eateries like Es Torrent, known for its exceptional paella, and El Chiringuito, which offers a beachside dining experience unlike any other.
As I continued my explorations, I found Fincadelica, another luxurious retreat that highlighted the island’s shift in hospitality. Built amidst serene landscapes of olive and orange trees, this exclusive property transcends standard summer rentals.
Completing the luxurious experience, Fincadelica features a biodynamic garden that serves the villa’s kitchen. Here, I encountered passionate artisans and healers, further encapsulating Ibiza’s new ethos of wellness intertwined with luxury.
At Atzaró, I experienced one of the best spa retreats, where lush gardens and boutique offerings create a serene atmosphere. My time there allowed me to renew my spirit, surrounded by natural beauty.
Six Senses Ibiza stands out as a stunning resort combining luxury and wellness. With breathtaking views, incredible dining options, and a renowned spa, it offers an escape into tranquility without compromising on comfort.
My stay here was revitalizing, filled with wellness treatments like cryofacials and holistic therapies that left me glowing with health. Even the traditional facials utilized local ingredients, reinforcing Ibiza’s commitment to natural rejuvenation.
This unique blend of pleasure and wellness defines modern Ibiza. Upon returning home, I felt reinvigorated and in perfect health, highlighting the transformative power of this enchanting island.
