Death Whinny: Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 and GT350R Canceled for 2025

2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 Heritage Edition

If you have been following the news, the announcement of the 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 Heritage Edition carries a bittersweet note: this special model marks the swan song of the GT350 in its current form. Ford has confirmed that 2020 will be the final model year for the Shelby GT350 and GT350R. The automaker’s official statement indicates, “With the 760-hp Shelby GT500 now in full stride, we will finish production of the Shelby GT350 and GT350R this fall as planned. This makes way for new additions to excite our passionate Mustang fans for the 2021 model year—including the limited-edition Mach 1.”

The formidable GT500 will carry the Shelby torch into 2021, which is certainly a positive development. However, the exhilarating flat-plane V-8 found in the GT350 and GT350R, specifically the 5.2-liter Voodoo engine, known for its thrilling staccato scream, will not have a designated home for the time being. It remains unclear whether this marks the end of the Voodoo’s journey or if it is merely a temporary pause.

No Direct Successor

What is unequivocally clear is that the GT350 does not have a direct successor. The Mustang Mach 1 promises to be remarkable, especially with its enthusiast focus and increased output compared to the standard GT. However, it lacks the Shelby heritage and will not feature the coveted flat-plane crank. Instead, it will be equipped with the cross-plane 5.0-liter Coyote V-8, generating 480 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. Although this change may be disappointing to flat-plane crank aficionados, the comprehensive Mach 1 package more than compensates.

Furthermore, the GT350’s revered Tremec TR-3160 manual transmission will be featured in the Mach 1, with a 10-speed automatic also available. The handling and braking components are a blend of Mustang GT Performance Pack 2 and components inspired by the Shelby GT500.

Desirability and Collectability

The Heritage Edition, although limited in availability, can be found on the 2020 GT350 and GT350R models. The knowledge that the GT350 is being retired might significantly increase the desirability and collectability of these last-model-year editions, making it imperative to act swiftly if you hope to secure one.
