Long Way Up: Ewan McGregor and Charlie Borman’s Electric Adventure
Did you know that the iBestTravel App features engaging adventure driving shows like Dangerous Roads and Idris Elba: No Limits? However, this article highlights an exciting journey beyond the iBestTravel universe: the new motorcycle series Long Way Up, starring celebrities Ewan McGregor and Charlie Borman.
Premise of Long Way Up
The premise remains consistent throughout their adventures: two long-time friends, Ewan and Charlie, embark on a journey around the world or across continents on hefty adventure motorcycles. The latest series, Long Way Up, predominantly takes place in South and Central America. However, this time, there is an electrifying twist!
Electric Motorcycles on the Road
In this installment, Charlie and Ewan are riding modified Harley-Davidson LiveWire motorcycles. Consequently, the adventure transforms as they explore the scenic routes while adjusting to the performance of electric bikes. The challenge of lifting heavy motorcycles over rough terrain adds an extra layer of excitement to their journey.
The Rivian R1T Challenge
What draws particular attention is the R1T electric pickup trucks serving as chase vehicles for this adventure. Rivian built a robust charging infrastructure to support this journey, installing over 200 level 2 chargers along the route, although some were temporary installations. The pre-production vehicles possessed a range of approximately 300 miles, charged nightly, which was crucial for the success of the expedition.
Brian Gase, Chief Engineer of Special Projects at Rivian, noted that this journey was not only a validation exercise but also an invaluable learning experience. The team encountered various field-related challenges, ranging from battery connections to suspension issues. Remarkably, both Rivian R1Ts completed the journey, handling the rigorous demands of the terrain and conditions.
The Endurance Test
Covering 13,000 miles posed a monumental challenge for any electric vehicle, let alone one navigating a carefully planned route. This undertaking not only serves as endurance testing for the electric pickup trucks but also offers valuable insights into the long-range capabilities of electric vehicles under real-world conditions. As we reflect on past adventures by traditional off-road vehicles, this exploration signifies a turning point for electric travel.
Long Way Up premiered on Apple TV+ on September 18, and new episodes are released weekly, inviting viewers to witness this compelling electric adventure.
