World’s Greatest Drag Race: A Showcase of Performance Cars
“Because we can” is the reason we hosted the World’s Greatest Drag Race for the first time eight years ago. Today, it’s clear: “Because we’d be crazy not to.”
This electrifying event is loved by car enthusiasts and the fine airmen of the 30th Space Wing, who have graciously hosted this exciting spectacle at Vandenberg Air Force Base for three consecutive years. Here, our 12 Best Driver’s Cars were lined up and revving on the pristine concrete of America’s fourth-longest runway.
A Unique Competitive Experience
Last year, we upped the ante by taking five of our drag race competitors on a half-mile journey, featuring Mike Finnegan’s Hemi V-8-powered ’55 Chevy (nicknamed “Blasphemi”). Moreover, the window-blowing, hood-scoop-shattering shenanigans that ensued created unforgettable moments.
This year, we sought to improve upon that exciting combination by doubling the distance for our 12-car field. We also invited a German comedian, a Polish car collector, and an Australian dentist to join in on the fun. Notably, our guests, Axel Stein and Patryk Mikiciuk, took the wheel of the AMG GT 63 S and Bentley Continental GT V8. Meanwhile, my cousin Quang filled in for me in the fun, yet relatively slower, BMW M2 Competition.
Thrilling Race Dynamics
The primary question is: what happens when you take 12 high-performance cars and push them beyond the quarter-mile? The anticipation builds as we entered the tarmac at Vandenberg Air Force Base, eager to witness how each competitor would perform.
Performance Questions
- Which production car accelerates more effectively after the quarter-mile?
- Does the 797-hp Hellcat Redeye prove its dominance, or does the 700+ horsepower DBS Superleggera take the victory?
- Can the track-specialized Senna deliver its performance despite its downforce-inducing design?
- Will any of the 200 mph-capable cars achieve remarkable speeds by the finish line?
