Explore Victoria Peak: A Gem in Hong Kong
Officially known as Victoria Peak, the Peak, as it’s commonly referred to, rises majestically just above Central, Hong Kong. Due to its impressive height, it became the preferred residence for many of the city’s early colonial administrators, allowing them to escape the oppressive humidity and relentless mosquitoes found in the bustling city below.
In the present day, various celebrities, politicians, and affluent residents reside here. Notably, the area features some of the most expensive real estate globally; the sale of a property on Mount Kellet in 2006 reached a remarkable $5,417 per square foot. The enduring appeal of the Peak can be attributed to its low humidity levels, breathtaking city views, and abundant greenery.
What There Is to See
Primarily, Victoria Peak offers breathtaking city views that are considered among the best in the world. The stunning cityscape of Hong Kong is best appreciated from the top of the Peak. The Peak walk provides a circular route around the mountaintop, showcasing views of both the city and the South China Sea. This view remains one of the most remarkable man-made sights globally. Furthermore, the Peak is largely undeveloped; outside of two shopping and entertainment complexes, it continues to be embraced by natural landscapes.
The two main complexes, the Peak Tower and Peak Galleria, boast a wide array of restaurants and coffee bars. The recently redeveloped Peak Tower features a viewing platform atop and is home to Madam Tussauds Hong Kong at its base. The Peak Tram conveniently transports visitors right into the heart of the Peak Tower.
When to Go
Daytime and nighttime visits both offer spectacular experiences; however, if you must select a preference, the neon lights adorning Hong Kong’s skyscrapers shine most brilliantly at night. It is advisable to check the weather beforehand to ensure that the day is neither too cloudy nor polluted, as such conditions could hinder your experience.
How to Get There
The most iconic transit option to Victoria Peak is the Victoria Peak Hong Kong Tram. It can be accessed from Garden Road in Central, or alternatively, take the Number 15 Bus from Admiralty MTR Station.
The Victoria Peak Hong Kong Tram, celebrated for its picturesque route, has been operating for over a century. It ascends at a steep angle, providing captivating views over the city as you ascend.
That said, the scenic Number 15 bus route is also noteworthy. Although it traverses the mountain a bit more slowly than the tram, it offers equally stunning vistas of Central and the Happy Valley Racecourse during the journey.
