Many people don’t realize exactly how exciting and friendly New Orleans can be for families with kids, especially toddlers. A family with a toddler can easily fill a week with unique, entertaining activities such as the ones featured below.

Audubon Aquarium of the Americas

Toddlers will be thrilled by the wide array of marine life displayed at this renowned aquarium. The presence of sharks and the elusive white alligator provoke awe, while playful sea otters and penguins bring joy and laughter. However, the highlight for many toddlers is the mesmerizing underwater tunnel, where they can gaze in wonder for extended periods. An IMAX theater is also available in the complex, although many toddlers might find it challenging to sit through an entire film.

Audubon Zoo

The Audubon Zoo is celebrated for its beautifully designed habitats. Small children not only enjoy seeing the animals but also love the water park area known as the Cool Zoo, which includes a designated section for toddlers and preschoolers.

Audubon Insectarium

The Audubon Insectarium might sound less appealing to some parents, but it is fascinating for kids. While there are some larger insects like spiders and cockroaches, the delightful butterfly garden provides a beautiful offset. The underground exhibit that allows kids to experience the world from a bug’s perspective is particularly popular. This attraction may be better suited for kids aged 2 and older.

Note that for those who wish to experience all three Audubon attractions along with an IMAX show, a discounted Audubon Experience Package is available.

Louisiana Children’s Museum

This interactive play-based museum offers a fun-filled air-conditioned option for a family afternoon. Exhibits include a miniature cafe, a tugboat for little captains, and the “First Adventures” exhibit tailored for ages 0 to 3. Special Toddler Time activities are occasionally offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The Louisiana Children’s Museum is a member of the Association of Children’s Museums and offers reciprocity with other participating museums nationwide, which might entitle you to free entry if you’re a member of your local children’s museum.

Additionally, riding the streetcar is a fun-filled experience for kids, offering a relaxed ride through the beautiful sights of New Orleans, making it an enjoyable activity for the whole family.

Storyland at City Park

This unique playground located in the enchanting City Park is created by the talented team at Blaine Kern’s Mardi Gras World. Instead of standard playground equipment, you’ll find giant, interactive statues of favorite storybook characters. Kids can engage their imaginations by climbing into Pinocchio’s Whale or sliding down the fiery breath of an enormous dragon.

Next to Storyland, Carousel Gardens Amusement Park houses the iconic “Flying Horses” carousel, which has been beloved by generations. While some rides may have height restrictions, children can still enjoy the carousel with their parents.

Besthoff Sculpture Garden

Address: 1 Collins Diboll Cir, New Orleans, LA 70124-4603, USA

The Besthoff Sculpture Garden provides a free outdoor art exhibit. This spacious garden allows toddlers to explore green areas while parents appreciate the art pieces on display. It’s a wonderful space for children to run and play while parents take in some culture. Caution is advised around any water features in the garden to prevent any unintended splashes.

Canal Street Ferry

Kiddos love boats, and taking a ride on the complimentary Canal Street Ferry is one of the best experiences around. There are two ferry routes: a short round trip to Algiers (5-10 minutes each way) and a longer trip to Gretna (about an hour round trip). The shorter route is more suitable for toddler attention spans, and the Algiers neighborhood is charming for a quick stroll, or you can remain at the ferry station to hop right back on the next return ferry.

While visits to Bourbon Street might not be ideal for families, exploring the vibrant street arts scene around Jackson Square offers plenty of visual stimulation for little ones. Grab some beignets from Cafe du Monde and enjoy people-watching amidst the colorful performances happening around you.
