Introducing the 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class
The all-new 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is here, and like its predecessors, it’s a technological powerhouse that advances the state of the automotive art. The new S-Class, launching in America next year, is touted to have more computing power than any car ever created. Moreover, its impressive silicon brains are applied to features such as personal profiles for up to eight drivers, MBUX voice-assistance functionality for each individual seat, active ambient lighting, and an active suspension that can prepare the car for a side impact. Consequently, this model is designed to pave the way towards our autonomous future.
Autonomous Driving Levels Explained
The new S-Class comes preloaded with capabilities for both SAE-designated Level 3 and Level 4 autonomy. The distinction between these levels is crucial: Level 3 autonomy requires a driver to be available for immediate intervention, while Level 4 allows for full autonomy within a designated area. Level 5 denotes complete autonomy, where the vehicle can drive itself anywhere, anytime.
Current Driving Assist Features
The current S-Class, along with many vehicles from other manufacturers, is capable of Level 2 driving. This includes features such as lane-centering, braking, accelerating, and even lane changes. However, the driver must remain alert and in control at all times. Although this system shows promise, it requires further refinement, as it can allow the car to drift within its lane when driving straight.
Level 3 System: Drive Pilot
The new S-Class introduces a Level 3 system known as Drive Pilot. This system is planned to be activated through over-the-air updates in selected markets starting in the second half of 2021. Initially, Germany will receive this feature, allowing S-Class owners to utilize it in designated areas, driving themselves at speeds up to 37 mph. The vehicle will automatically adjust speed, maintain distance, and stay in the lane while allowing the driver to engage in non-driving activities.
Future Capabilities of Drive Pilot
Should legislation permit, enhancements to the Drive Pilot program will allow operations at higher speeds, obtainable through wireless updates. In the event that a driver is incapacitated as the vehicle approaches the end of a Level 3 designated area, the car will autonomously brake to a stop, activate hazard lights, call emergency services, and unlock the doors.
Level 4 Autonomous Features
The Level 4 capabilities integrated into the S-Class—set to be activated later—focus on automated valet parking (AVP) through the Intelligent Park Pilot feature. This advanced system builds on Drive Pilot, enabling the S-Class to park itself in facilities equipped with AVP systems. The automatic parking process begins when the driver instructs the vehicle to park via a smartphone application after exiting the car at an appropriate location.
