Top Gastro Pubs to Visit in Düsseldorf

Thirsty in Düsseldorf? The city is renowned for its copper-colored, top-fermented Altbier, and what’s a better place to enjoy your Alt than in a traditional gastropub? Here are some of the best gastro pubs and restaurants in Düsseldorf’s Altstadt (Old Town), all of them brewing their own beer on the premises.

What is Altbier?

The translation of “Old Beer” might not sound that tasty, but this quintessential Düsseldorf beer is a must-try when you’re in town. Its name refers to the top-fermentation process, a traditional brewing style that results in a distinctively clean, crisp taste similar to lager. If you are looking for it in stores in Germany, the Diebels brand is very popular; however, you should really experience the offerings from small, local brewers for the best representation.

Sticke Beer

Each of these traditional brewpubs also produces a small-batch of seasonal Sticke beer. Offered twice a year, in January and October, you can try this legendary strong beer with an alcohol content of 6 percent. Note that different breweries may use various names for it; for example, Schlüsels Brewery spells it Stike, while Schumacher refers to it as Latzenbier.

You’ve been warned—don’t leave Düsseldorf without ordering a pint… or a few.
