Fort Ward Park Overview

Fort Ward Park features the Fort Ward Museum and encompasses a 41.4-acre historic area located on the west end of Old Town Alexandria. This significant site served as a Union fort from 1861 to 1865, playing a critical role in defending Washington, DC during the Civil War. As you explore the grounds, you will encounter cannons, bombproof structures that sheltered 500 soldiers, and the reconstructed living quarters of high-ranking officers.

Fort Ward Museum

The Fort Ward Museum is a replica of the historically significant building that once stood on these grounds. It showcases a range of Civil War exhibits, interpretive programs, guided tours, lectures, and living history demonstrations. Artifacts available for viewing include:

  • Military uniforms
  • Diaries and letters from soldiers
  • Weapons and military equipment
  • Surgeons’ tools
  • Musical instruments
  • Historic photographs

A film presentation provides additional historical context, and the museum also features a gift shop offering a selection of postcards and other memorabilia.

Museum Hours:

April to October: Tuesday to Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday Noon to 5 p.m.

November to March: Tuesday to Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday Noon to 5 p.m.

Closed on Mondays.

Park Facilities

Fort Ward Historic Park offers various amenities, including:

  • Two shelters
  • A playground
  • Picnic areas
  • A designated dog exercise area

In addition, the park hosts special events such as Civil War and Revolutionary War reenactments, as well as live musical concerts throughout the year.

Park Hours: Open daily from 9 a.m. until sunset.
