Avoid These 5 Common Mistakes in Old San Juan

Tips for Visiting Old San Juan

Old San Juan is a premier destination in Puerto Rico. The history, tropical pastel hues, colonial architecture, and incredible cultural offerings are simply incomparable, not just in Puerto Rico but across the region. Moreover, given the compact size of this city—just seven square blocks partially enclosed by an ancient wall—it is remarkable how much there is to discover. Each visit brings a new sense of wonder.

Sightseeing, dining, nightlife, and rich culture are all easily accessible here. In order to make the most of your time, consider the following tips on what not to do when you visit Old San Juan.

1. Don’t Drive

Anyone who has visited Old San Juan recognizes this truth: driving here can be quite a challenge. The best approach is to leave your car at your hotel. A free trolley service transports visitors to all major attractions, and the city’s narrow streets, coupled with limited parking, can be daunting. Furthermore, traffic congestion can be quite stressful.

Walking is the most enjoyable and effective way to experience this area. If needed, taxis are readily available at key locations, such as Plaza de Armas, near Plaza Colón, and the pier by the Sheraton Old San Juan. However, if you plan to explore outside of Old San Juan, renting a car is advisable.

2. Don’t Wear Heels

Comfort is paramount for exploring Old San Juan, meaning comfortable footwear is a must. Navigating the uphill streets from Castillo San Cristóbal to El Morro is significantly easier in supportive shoes. Trying to walk in heels on these charming but uneven adoquines (cobblestone streets) can be both precarious and uncomfortable.

3. Don’t Diet

Old San Juan boasts an array of delectable dining options such as El Jibarito, The Parrot Club, and Dragonfly, ensuring that your culinary experience will be unforgettable.

4. Don’t Stay Indoors

While the hotels in Old San Juan, such as Chateau Cervantes and El Convento, offer unique comfort and charm, it is essential to venture out. The streets are filled with museums, historic monuments, lively plazas, scenic promenades, quaint cafes, and vibrant shops waiting for your discovery. Engaging in local experiences will enrich your trip significantly.

5. Don’t Go Swimming

It’s crucial to note that Old San Juan lacks a beach. If you seek a refreshing swim, consider heading to one of the beautiful beaches in Puerto Rico. For those determined to enjoy the water while in the city, walking along the Paseo del Morro will provide scenic views, although it’s advisable to travel outside the city for a better beach experience.
