Summary
Cable Car Overview
The Sugarloaf cable car in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, has welcomed over 37 million visitors since its inauguration in 1912. Hence, cable cars operate every 30 minutes or when the car reaches full capacity.
The experience consists of two stages, each lasting approximately three minutes. The initial stage transports you from Praia Vermelha (Red Beach) to Morro da Urca (Urca Hill), ascending to an altitude of 220 meters or about 240 yards. Subsequently, the second stage conveys you from Morro da Urca to Sugarloaf Mountain, reaching 528 meters or about 577 yards. The speed of the cable car fluctuates between 21 to 31 kilometers per hour, and each car is designed to accommodate 65 passengers.
This remarkable cable car was originally conceived by Brazilian engineer Augusto Ferreira Ramos, who was a founding member of Companhia Caminho Aéreo Pão de Açúcar. The cable car system underwent a comprehensive refurbishment in 1972, followed by cable updates in 2002 and an electronic operating system upgrade in May 2009. New cable cars, featuring an improved ventilation system and tinted anti-glare glass, were installed in 2008 for the ride between Praia Vermelha and Urca. Additionally, four new cars for the Morro da Urca-Sugarloaf segment were brought in from Switzerland during the renovation’s second phase, costing approximately 3 million euros. The Sugarloaf cable car system is renowned for its safety globally.
