Located in the heart of downtown Lakeland, Lake Mirror and its Promenade are a stunning community recreation area conceived by Tom Appleyard, the manager of Lakeland’s Chamber of Commerce in the early 1920s. Noted New York landscape architect Charles W. Leavitt transformed Appleyard’s vision into reality.

The original design included an amphitheater and a sculpture; however, due to budget constraints, these were eliminated. The seawall along the northern and southern shores and the wide pedestrian path, completed in 1926, remain as principal features of the park.

Lake Mirror Park and amphitheater were dedicated in the fall of 1999, while Hollis Garden opened in 2000 on the southeastern shore. Additionally, a sculpture adds an artistic touch to the northeast shore.

Directions

Lake Mirror is easily accessible from Massachusetts Avenue (Hwy. 33) in Downtown Lakeland, Florida, and is bordered by Lake Mirror Drive.

The Promenade

Over the years, the Promenade, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has become a source of community pride. Although it was conceived in the 1920s, renovations 20 years ago aimed to restore the Promenade to its original grandeur and vision.

Hollis Garden

Hollis Garden, serving as the centerpiece of the southern shore of Lake Mirror, features a neoclassical, Tuscan gazebo that can be seen from across the lake. Opened in 2000, it showcases over 10,000 flowers, ornamental shrubs, and shade trees in a beautifully tiered landscape.

Fountain View

The fountain serves as the focal point of Hollis Garden, where a series of bowls and runnels flow down to the edge of Lake Mirror. This design illustrates the connection between humanity and nature, demonstrating how we can enhance the beauty of Florida’s landscapes.

“Tribute to the Spirit of Volunteerism” Sculpture

Installed in April 2004, the modern “Tribute to the Spirit of Volunteerism” sculpture, designed by Albert Paley, has sparked both admiration and controversy as the centerpiece of Lake Mirror Park. This impressive 41-foot-tall sculpture weighs 18,000 pounds, featuring a striking design of colors and shapes that captures attention amid its historical surroundings.

Barnett Family Park

Barnett Family Park, located on Lakeland’s Lake Mirror, is a five-building complex offering diverse recreational facilities. It includes amenities for community entertainment, senior activities, and venue rentals. Nestled within this complex is Barnett Family Park, featuring a fantastic playground, a water play area, and a spacious picnic pavilion—all set in the vibrant Downtown Lakeland.

Swan Lake

During your visit to Lake Mirror, you will likely encounter various birds, including seagulls and large pelicans; however, the majestic swans truly enhance the lake’s beauty and romantic appeal. Both black and white swans are present, adding to the lake’s enchanting atmosphere.

Ornate Loggia

The ornate loggia located at the foot of Massachusetts Avenue along the western shore of Lake Mirror is an architectural delight. It serves as a roofed open gallery, providing views of the open court below and creating a scenic passage from the street to the lake.

The flags adorning the loggia symbolize a tribute to the visionary behind Lake Mirror Park, signifying a legacy that has enriched the community for over half a century.
