Discover Alta Vista Bison Farm in Rutland, Massachusetts
Alta Vista Bison Farm has sadly closed. If you are interested in visiting a bison farm in New England and purchasing fresh bison meat, consider a visit to Mohawk Bison in Goshen, Connecticut.
This article recounts my visit to Alta Vista Bison Farm in 2001, preserving memories of the farm, which is now a private residence. Below, explore more about the Rutland-area attractions in central Massachusetts.
1. Bison Farm Overview
Bison, often called buffalo, are a lean meat alternative that is lower in fat and cholesterol while being higher in protein compared to beef, pork, or chicken. At Alta Vista Farm in Rutland, Massachusetts, visitors could shop for a variety of bison meat products, including roasts, ribs, steaks, burgers, and even hotdogs. Moreover, the farm provided an opportunity to see these majestic creatures up close.
These American Bison once peaked in numbers during the millions but faced near extinction during America’s westward expansion due to excessive hunting for hides and sport. By 1890, fewer than 1,000 bison remained in the United States.
Thanks to dedicated ranchers and farmers, the bison population has made a significant recovery, including efforts from farms right here in New England.
2. Visiting Alta Vista Farm
Transitioning from a dairy farm to a bison farm in the late 1960s, the Mann family, who has owned this historic farm since 1951, focused solely on bison after selling their beef herd. Retail operations began in 1994, offering various bison meat cuts and Native American gifts. Visitors were encouraged to call ahead at 508-886-4365 to check for availability of hayrides to see the herd. The bison grazing could also be viewed from the road.
For an unforgettable experience, the annual Bison Days weekend festival happens each September. This family-friendly event features tractor-drawn hayrides into the bison herd (with white bread as the charm to gather the animals), buffalo burgers and hotdogs, and opportunities to learn about Native American culture while shopping for traditional crafts.
Don’t hesitate to try bison meat! Visitors could gather free cooking tips and recipes at the farm to help in exploring this healthy, lean alternative to traditional meats.
