Summary
Overview of Schlitterbahn
Dating back to 1979, Schlitterbahn is one of the oldest water parks. It stands out for its unique history; in the early days of the industry, there were no established water park ride manufacturers, requiring its owners to innovate continuously.
Over the years, Schlitterbahn has transformed into one of the largest water park resorts and a leading destination in both the U.S. and globally. Its seasonal operations still draw impressive attendance numbers, comparable to year-round parks in Florida, significantly surpassing those of other U.S. seasonal parks.
Unlike many typical water parks, Schlitterbahn boasts quirky charm, particularly in its original section. Our visit occurred early in the season, leading to some attractions, such as The Falls, being closed to guests. Nevertheless, we were able to tour the resort, capturing intriguing photos of its water slides and attractions when they were devoid of guests or water.
Blastenhoff Experience
The image of the Blastenhoff tower showcases a newer section of the resort. Here, riders prepare to embark on the Master Blaster water coaster, a revolutionary uphill water coaster developed by the owners of Schlitterbahn. At the base, The Torrent offers a unique experience with strong jets that create waves and swift currents.
Accommodations at the Resort
The resort features over 250 hotel units, including cabins, cottages, bungalows, and suites. Originally, the water park attractions were integrated into what was known as the Landa Resort to enhance the experiences of its overnight guests. Today, it serves as a destination in its own right, offering a mini water park vacation experience.
In the original area of the resort, water slides are remarkably close to vintage motel rooms dating back to the Landa Resort days. Imagine awakening to the sounds of delighted riders zooming past your window!
The Comal River
The beautiful Comal River flows adjacent to the resort, with several water slides emptying into it. During our visit in the early season, we observed sections of the resort were closed, meaning that guests in tubes typically floating in the river were not seen.
Water Attractions
One of the enchanting water slides flows through the original area of the resort. Unfortunately, it was early in the season, and this section remained closed, resulting in no riders or water visible.
This slide is one of the park’s earlier constructions. Unlike many modern water slides made from Fiberglass, several older slides at Schlitterbahn are crafted from concrete and designed to be part of the landscape.
Here’s a glimpse of one of the tube chute slides in action, showcasing the thrill of water adventures.
Family Activities
Modern accommodations at the sprawling resort include the charming “Treehaus” suites, reminiscent of a cozy ski lodge. We enjoyed a studio suite with various amenities like two queen-size beds and a kitchenette, fit for a family stay.
Water-Free Falls
The Tubenbach section of the resort features The Falls, noted as one of the longest water park rides in the world. Although it was closed during our visit, its impressive length and the float experience it offers are worth noting.
Transpotainment
The AquaVeyer is an innovative system moving riders in tubes, known as “transpotainment,” which creatively combines transportation and entertainment.
Kristal Clear River
The Kristal River, which loops around the Surfenburg area of the resort, is an endless lazy river experience, perfect for relaxation.
Dragon’s Breath
One of the themed rides at the resort is Dragon’s Revenge, recognized as the world’s first uphill water coaster. It offers a unique experience as jets of water project passengers’ rafts up sections, complemented by impressive themed decor.
Let Me Go Mom!
Schlitterbahn is not only for thrill-seekers. The park offers numerous attractions designed specifically for younger kids, ensuring fun for all ages.
Surf’s (Always) Up
Another highlighted attraction in the Surfenburg area is Boogie Bahn, recognized as the world’s first wave-making bodyboarding ride, allowing skilled riders to experience the thrill of surfing.
