The capital of the small state of Qatar, a gas and oil-rich country in the Middle East, Doha is a cosmopolitan metropolis stretching inland from a nearly circular bay lined by a promenade walkway offering the perfect sunset location.
Until a few years ago, Qatar was primarily recognized as a tax-free location for foreign workers who still make up more than 85 percent of the nation’s 2.4 million residents. Moreover, it served as a transit airport for long-haul flights between east and west. Recently, however, the country has transformed itself into a vibrant art hub and desert tourist destination, featuring luxurious hotels, world-class restaurants, lively nightclubs, and a sporting venue that hosted the FIFA World Cup in 2022.
Shop at Souq Waqif
At Souq Waqif, narrow lanes are filled with the aroma of spices and incense, featuring shops that sell colorful materials, cooking pots large enough to hold a camel, and jewelry fit for royalty. The historic Souq Waqif, literally “standing market,” dates back over a century when it served as a stopping point for passing Bedouins. A fire in 2003 destroyed much of it, but the area was meticulously restored in the traditional style, enhanced by restaurants and cafes.
