Want to visit Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, but have limited time? Don’t worry, with this guide you will experience the best sights of Tallinn in one day (this is our personal recommendation).
Estonia is a small country with a complex past, chiefly marked by occupations from the Soviets, Germans, Swedes, and Danes. However, the last two decades have witnessed a significant turnaround as Estonia flourishes today, with robust education systems and freedom of speech. Moreover, it’s a tech-savvy nation credited as the birthplace of software like Skype. So we headed directly to its capital: Tallinn.
We only had one night and one day in Tallinn. Although this isn’t sufficient to form a thorough judgement about a country, it does offer a glimpse into its beauty and charm. Here are our top recommendations for things to do in Tallinn in one day:
Things to do in Tallinn in One Day
Wander Around Tallinn’s Old Town
True to its name, Tallinn’s Old Town is steeped in history, with parts dating back to the 11th century. The entire area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, showcasing impressive architecture and delightful surprises around every corner.
Notable landmarks such as Fat Margaret’s Tower add character to the Old Town. Although the Old Town is relatively small, taking approximately 30 minutes to walk from one end to the other, numerous side streets and alleys beckon further exploration, making this a favorite activity during our visit.
Check Out Raekoja Plats (Town Hall Square)
This vibrant square lies at the heart of Old Town and is surrounded by a variety of restaurants, souvenir shops, and often bustling markets. While considering lunch options, we decided against the pricey restaurants and opted for an authentic burger and beer from a nearby locale instead.
Walk to the Top of St Olaf’s Church
Dating back to the 12th century, St Olaf’s Church presents stunning views from its summit. While the interior might not hold as much allure, the ascent allows for a charming exterior view of the church and panoramic vistas over Tallinn.
Best Views in Tallinn
To fully appreciate Tallinn’s visual appeal, scale heights where you can spot the city’s iconic orange roofs. For the best views, we recommend visiting St Olaf’s Church or possibly taking a hot air balloon ride over the city.
Count the Creepy Dolls in Tallinn
A quirky attraction in Tallinn is the abundance of creepy dolls scattered throughout the city. Though they may be unsettling, they add a unique charm to your photo opportunities as you wander around.
