This centuries-old phenomenon occurs when the moon’s gravitational pull aligns with a strong scirocco, or warm wind, pushing water from the Adriatic Sea into the Venetian Lagoon. Since acqua alta is a tidal occurrence, it lasts for only three to four hours during high tide.
What to Pack

Given the increased precipitation, you may also want to include an umbrella, raincoat, waterproof windbreaker, and rubber boots to navigate the puddles and potential acqua alta flooding on the cobblestoned streets. Additionally, it would be wise to pack a few plastic bags for any wet clothing or boots you need to store in your suitcase.
