Have you ever been 4X4 off-road driving before? Surely, we replied. We drove in the Mongol Rally and crossed deserts, mountains, and rivers in our tiny Nissan Almera through 15,000 km of terrain. We can handle anything!
When our guide suggested we give 4X4 off-road driving a try in Co. Kildare, Ireland, we thought it would be a pleasant adventure. Little did we know that this would turn into an all-out 4X4 experience, taking us over obstacles like climbing walls, slanted roads, and teeter-totters.

This four-wheel adventure is located just 30 minutes outside of Dublin, making it a perfect day trip from the city.
We met Dave, the owner of OffRoadDriving.IE, in the parking lot of the beautiful Palmerston House Estate, where we hopped into his roomy Land Rover to begin our journey to the driving course.
I didn’t expect to be driving something so luxurious. These durable Land Rovers are built to withstand anything thrown at them, and we were about to put them to the test.
I decided to drive first, and I’m glad that I did. Had I watched what I was going to do beforehand, I might have hesitated for fear of rolling the Land Rover. We navigated through teeter-totters, up and down stairs, and even went sideways on a ramp.
The hills were steep and muddy, requiring guidance from Dave as he talked us through each challenge. He imparted the basics of 4X4 off-road driving, such as coasting downhill by removing both feet from the gas, brakes, and clutch, and gearing up to make it up the steep and slippery slopes.
Even if you have never driven manual transmission before, Dave assured us that many of his clients had very little driving experience. He takes it slow and easy, allowing drivers to feel comfortable behind the wheel. Our journey began with a gentle downhill slope, easing us into the 4X4 experience. Once we sensed the power and safety of the Land Rover, we were ready for anything.
I took several spins around the course, which included rivers and mud holes, before handing the wheel over to Dave, who was eager to experience the thrill himself.
One of the highlights for him was driving at full speed into the camel bumps, creating a splash of water that sprayed over the windshield. I thought I heard something crack, but our guide assured us that nothing could break these robust trucks. They are incredibly durable. I wish we had a Land Rover like this when we drove from England to Mongolia; we would have sailed through the deep ruts of Kazakhstan.
4X4 Off-Road Driving is popular for adventure seekers, including bachelor parties and outings, but anyone visiting Ireland should consider this experience. It’s situated on a beautiful estate in the tranquil Irish countryside, offering a different perspective of life compared to bustling Dublin. It’s relaxing, incredibly fun, and just 30 minutes from the city—making it an easy drive.
After the thrilling adventure, visitors can unwind with some tea at the main house before exploring more of County Kildare.
