Top Romantic Activities in Udaipur, India

We knew right away that we were going to love Udaipur. Known as one of the most romantic cities in India, Udaipur is breathtaking to look at.

Situated on Lake Pichola, Udaipur houses buildings fit for a Maharana (king of kings) that line the waterfront with architecture dating back to the 1500s. Domed rooftops and arched windows make for a storybook setting.

Days can be spent lounging on an oversized couch with big cushions gazing at the ghats (steps leading to the water) and daily life. But there are so many amazing things to do in Udaipur it would be a shame to laze all day long! So, after relaxing for a few days, we set out to see Udaipur’s top attractions.

Things to do in Udaipur

Udaipur was a place we could relax and recharge after some hectic travels throughout India. Tourists dine on balconies and rooftop patios as they overlook the cityscape of pastel yellows and whites while couples stroll the street hand in hand, browsing the markets for memories to take home. However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t many amazing activities in Udaipur besides taking it easy.

During our 10 days in Udaipur, we explored many of the top attractions and can honestly say that Udaipur was our favorite destination in India.

Udaipur – India’s Romantic City

1. City Palace Museum

The City Palace Udaipur

The city’s main attraction is the Udaipur City Palace, former home to the 19 Maharajas of Mewar. In 1969, the palace was opened as the City Palace Museum, granting the public a glimpse into the majestic world of the Maharajas.

The City Palace complex is gigantic and took more than 400 years to complete! Being so expansive, there are numerous things to explore.

Upon entering the courtyard, you’ll see the Palace of Kings, the assembly hall, a gallery dedicated to the warrior Maharana Pratap, the garden palace, and many more beautiful structures and courtyards.

The buildings blend beautifully along the waterfront, and going inside the palace can occupy several hours as you truly explore its grandeur.

2. Ranakpur Jain Temple

One of the most incredible places we visited in all of India was the Ranakpur Jain Temple, conveniently located near Udaipur. It’s affordable and simple to hire a driver for a day to take you out to the Jain Temple, and we highly recommend it. (Drivers typically cost approximately 800Rs – $10 USD for 6-8 hours)

The temple features 1,444 hand-carved marble pillars, covering an area of 48,000 square feet, making it one of the largest temples in India. Wandering through the 29 halls leaves visitors in awe of the intricate marble carvings. Construction began in the 15th century, spanning over 50 years until completion.

  • Address: Desuri, Ranakpur Rd, Sadri, Rajasthan. 100km from Udaipur

3. Kumbhalgarh Fort

Why visit Kumbhalgarh Fort? It has the second longest wall in the world after the Great Wall of China! More than just its wall, it is a fascinating site dating back to the 15th century, once the guardian of Rajasthan, which only fell to the Mughals once. This fort was the backbone of the Rajput Kingdom.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kumbhalgarh Fort is about two hours from Udaipur and can be included in a tour with the Jain Temple. You can book a day tour from Udaipur to see both Kumbhalgarh Fort and Ranakpur Jain Temple effortlessly. Free cancellation is available with up to 24 hours’ notice.

4. Lake Pichola Sunset Cruise

Lake Pichola was created in 1362, making it nearly 700 years old. A boat trip along the lake is a must when visiting Udaipur.

The sunset is a magical time to witness the lake. Boat trips take you to see Jag Niwas and Jag Mandir Palace on Jagmandir Island, Jag Niwas Island palace, and of course, the Lake Palace Hotel. Experience a Lake Pichola Cruise. A private car will pick you up from all hotels in Udaipur for a sunset cruise of Lake Pichola. Easy cancellation and last-minute bookings are available.

5. Taj Lake Palace

Udaipur is so stunning that it was used as the setting for the James Bond Movie Octopussy. I still recall the scene where James Bond stays at a luxurious hotel in the middle of the water—indeed, this oasis is right in the middle of Lake Pichola at the Lake Palace Hotel.

Originally named Jag Niwas Palace, this palatial site was built in the 18th century by Rana Jagat Singh II, showcasing absolute white decadence in this fairy tale setting.

Today, it operates as a heritage five-star hotel. It’s stunning enough to see from the water, but to experience the grandeur of the Maharajas’ summer palace, make a reservation for dinner. For ultimate luxury, consider staying in a romantic suite at Taj Lake Palace hotel.

6. Monsoon Palace

As a James Bond fan, I was thrilled to visit Monsoon Palace, another filming location for Octopussy. Also known as Sajjan Garh Palace, Monsoon Palace sits atop a hill, offering panoramic views of Udaipur. Its design allowed for monitoring monsoons (hence the name) and includes nine storied astronomical domes for sky watching.

Surrounded by the Sajjangarh Wildlife Sanctuary covering 5.19 square kilometers, we didn’t explore this area during our visit. However, consider booking a full-day Udaipur Private City Tour to see the best of Udaipur efficiently. The tour starts with views from Monsoon Palace, then leads to Udaipur City Palace, Jagdish Temple, lotus pools, fountains at Saheliyon ki Bari, and concludes at Lake Pichola for an optional boat ride.

7. Karni Mata Temple

It is probably one of the strangest temples you will ever visit. It is not for the faint of heart, but if you seek something truly unique in Rajasthan, a visit to the Karni Mata Rat Temple is essential. Just a short drive from Udaipur, this temple is renowned for its sacred rats, believed to be reincarnated humans. Look out for the white rat, as spotting it will bring you good luck!

8. Jagdish Temple

Jagdish Temple is conveniently located in the Old City, making it easy to visit. Inside, you can explore the statues of God Ganesh, Vishnu, and Garuda. Entry is free, and you’ll be met with local welcomes.

Standing at 79 feet tall, Jagdish Temple is hard to miss. Like numerous structures in India, this temple has a rich history, as Maharana Jagat Singh commissioned it in 1651. Be sure to dress appropriately. Temple rules dictate that shoulders and knees should be covered.

9. Shilpgram Festival

If you find yourself in Udaipur in December, don’t miss one of our favorite festivals in India. The Shilpgram Festival showcases the local life of farmers, craftspeople, and villagers. However, even if you’re not there during the festival, Shilpgram operates as an ongoing craft village for visitors to enjoy.

10. Lakes of Udaipur

Udaipur is famously dubbed the City of Lakes. Besides Lake Pichola, it boasts four other major lakes: Fateh Sagar Lake, Swaroop Sagar Lake, Doodh Talai Lake, and Rangsagar Lake. All were constructed by Maharajas from the 14th to the 19th centuries. Boat rides on these lakes allow you to view the palaces, luxury hotels, and temples or explore the tranquil stone walkways along the water.

11. Hathi Pol Bazaar

Shopping in India is quite an adventure, and Hathi Pol Bazaar is Udaipur’s most famous market. Known for its miniature paintings from Rajasthan, this bustling market is an excellent place to find souvenirs. Locals frequent the market, ensuring you find quality items at fair prices.

12. Eklingji Temple

Another intriguing temple to visit in Udaipur is Eklingji Temple, a 72-room Jain temple dedicated to Lord Eklingji of the Mewar Clan. This ancient temple dates back to 734 AD and is a must-visit when exploring Udaipur and Rajasthan.

13. Hanuman Ghat

We stayed on the other side of the lake at Hanuman Ghat in the Old City, a location I highly recommend for its tranquility. This area is less hectic than the main city side. An early morning stroll offers glimpses of local life by the water, where women wash clothes on the ghats, while others enjoy the fresh morning air.

Hanuman Ghat provides magnificent views of the Old Town, and if you venture to the far southern pier at sunset, you’ll witness the most breathtaking views in town.

14. Dining at a Rooftop Restaurant

Tourists enjoy meals on balconies and rooftop patios while overlooking the picturesque cityscape of pastel yellows and creams. For now, we leave you with images of this enchanting city in Rajasthan where one can easily lose track of time. The locals are incredibly friendly, creating a warm atmosphere that feels like making lifelong friends.

  • Suggested rooftop bars:
    • Jagat Niwas Palace Hotel
    • Upre at the top of Pichola Hotel
    • Aravali Lakeview at the Radisson Blu
    • Baro Masi at Udai Kothi

15. Hot Air Balloon Over Udaipur

We never pass up an opportunity for a hot air balloon ride, and Udaipur offers romantic sunrise balloon rides. If you’re seeking a memorable experience in India’s most romantic city, this is it!

Although we didn’t partake in this experience, our global travels have proven that hot air balloon rides are incredibly romantic. The only company we found in Udaipur offering this thrilling adventure is The Great Next.

16. Get Lost in the Old Town

One of our favorite activities in Udaipur was strolling through the Old City out to the pier. The people are remarkably friendly, and we formed many new friendships during our visit.

Sunset at the pier is an excellent opportunity to engage with the locals. I’ll never forget encountering the same man each evening and eventually striking up a conversation. Chaupin, a retired teacher, performed his evening exercises at sunset while waiting for the temple to open.

Our engaging chat revealed many other activities around Udaipur that we hadn’t previously considered, such as the Shilpgram festival mentioned earlier. As the sun sets, the Royal Palace complex comes alive with lights reflecting beautifully on the water, creating incredible photographic opportunities.

Where to Stay in Udaipur

Staying in or near the Old City of Udaipur is advisable as it hosts the best selection of hotels and is conveniently close to all attractions. Additionally, accommodations along Lake Pichola are excellent, where we stayed and thoroughly enjoyed our time.
