Explore the Majestic Italian Apennines Hiking Trails

If you go hiking in the Apennines in the Italian province of Modena, you won’t have to worry about crowds on the trail. However, you will witness beautiful scenery that we’ve all come to expect when traveling in Italy, and you will experience the best of Italian hospitality.

I will admit, before staying in the Emilia Romagna region, I didn’t know anything about it. Like many, I visited the usual tourist destinations like Venice, Florence, and Rome, without exploring beyond the typical tourist traps. Luckily, we work in travel and had the opportunity to learn from others. Therefore, when we heard about the Apennine Mountains, we had to go!

Hiking the Apennines

We stayed at the Belvedere Hotel in Montese and participated in their Harmony and Nature tour, which was the perfect introduction to hiking the Apennines. With 130km of footpaths branching off the Belvedere Trail in Montese, this hike is rich in history and stunning landscapes.

There are trails suited for all levels of experience, from easier tourist paths on comfortable terrain to more challenging trails with steep grades.

Ancient Trail of Montese

We took a train from Bologna to Vignola, transferring to the peaceful town of Montese in the Apennines. This small town, with a rich history, was pivotal during World War II, as it was the site of one of the final battles in Italy. It was liberated by Brazilian forces on April 17, 1945, a story you can explore at the Montese Historical Museum, housed in a charming seventeenth-century rectory.

The village, dating back to 600 BC, is along the ancient Roman Road. Today, you can walk this historic trail, which is a key part of our hiking adventure.

Only in Italy

In typical Italian style, our trek started only after indulging in a sumptuous feast the night before. We dined at the wonderful Belvedere Hotel, enjoying a delightful meal of truffle pasta, grilled vegetables, stuffed tortellini, and balsamic-infused chicken.

Even though we were hiking the next day, we were persuaded to enjoy some local wine. The hotel owner insisted we try the regional Lambrusco, emphasizing that it’s a must-have experience.

Hiking Apennines – The Percorso Belvedere track

After a hearty buffet breakfast at the hotel, we set off on our hike, meeting our guide Stefano. We quickly became friends, sharing stories amidst the breathtaking scenery.

Hiking in the Apennines features several short and steep hills. While they may seem picturesque from a distance, you should be ready for plenty of up and down hiking. Fortunately, there’s no need to rush; there’s ample time to soak in the stunning views.

This region was once infamous for its chestnut gathering, which was essential for making staple foods like chestnut bread. Although the forests suffered during the war, they have since recovered, creating a lush and vibrant countryside.

Hiking with a Guide

During our hike, we ventured through forests and fields as Stefano shared fascinating stories about the area’s history. Along the way, we encountered cows, donkeys, and quaint cottages, making it feel like we had stepped into a postcard. We hiked for hours without encountering another soul, thanks to the vast array of trails available.

These paths have connected villages for centuries and, while locals primarily utilize them, efforts are underway to entice more tourists to the area. Therefore, if you seek tranquility and scenic nature hikes in Italy, this region is a remarkable choice!

How to Hike from Montese

You can start your hiking adventure in Montese independently, following trail signs and utilizing a map, or join hikes offered by Trekking Italy, which range from one to seven days.

Other Things to do in Montese

Trekking in the Apennines encompasses more than just hiking. This area boasts rich history and culture. Visitors can explore Montese Tower, taste balsamic vinegar, visit a Parmesan factory, or connect with a local family. Life in the Apennine Mountains remains unchanged; many locals still produce their own wine, cultivate olives, and age their own balsamic vinegar.

Ah, life is good here. It makes one contemplate why our lifestyles shifted so dramatically in the 20th century. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to enjoy life surrounded by family in this beautiful region, sipping wine and relishing fine Parmesan drizzled with aged balsamic vinegar?
