We always dreamed of camping on a private island and experiencing sea kayaking in Thailand. With John Gray Sea Canoe, that dream came true. After a splendid day paddling through tidal caves and exploring island lagoons, we were escorted at night to our private beach where we would spend the night.

As we arrived at our camp, we were greeted by our guide Natt and a young apprentice named Alan, who had prepared camp and set up our tents. We enjoyed refreshing towels and cold water by the roaring fire, followed by icy cold beer and campfire snacks to elevate our spirits.

That night, we traded stories and walked to the beach to witness luminescent plankton glowing in the Andaman Sea.

The next morning, we had a big adventure ahead. Although the islands were not as secluded as they were in the past, we were greeted by the engines of longtail boats in the bay. After enjoying a breakfast feast meant for ten, but only consumed by our small party of two, Natt took us out to explore more sea caves.

Having experienced several Hongs the day prior on the John Gray regular day trip, we were eager to paddle on our own. When we approached open water, we were welcomed by John and an intern from Holland. We continued our adventure by entering another sea cave, inching through a small opening while dodging stalactites.

Many tour companies often neglect proper practices, allowing tourists to sit on fragile mangrove roots, creating noise, scaring wildlife, and littering. After spending a little too much time in one Hong, the rising tide made us cautious as we paddled through the caves. Despite the initial apprehension, we reminded ourselves that we were with an expert, yet the rising water made our exit a thrilling experience.

A large longtail boat awaited us, ready to take us to hidden islands. This journey was notably different as we ventured to less-visited locales that John favored. The beauty of the surrounding islands was extraordinary and serene.

Sea Caves, Canoes, and Culture in the Isles of Thailand

Today, we explored the famous sea caves and Hongs located near Phuket. The journey to the first cave was scenic, with Sea Eagles following our boat. Excitingly, we noticed a Bollywood film shoot taking place during our ride amid the breathtaking karst formations.

As we enjoyed our lunch, we learned about the upcoming adventures planned for the day. John Gray’s unique approach involves fewer guests, enhancing the overall experience.

Time to Canoe

After a safety briefing, we hopped into canoes, ready for a thrilling adventure. Paddling through narrow passages required utmost focus, as we navigated carefully without disturbing the natural environment.

One cave stretched 200 meters, and we glided through the darkness, guided only by Natt’s headlamp.

Exploring Lagoons

Upon exiting the cave, we discovered serene lagoons surrounded by cliffs and mangrove trees. John Gray, the pioneer of the sea kayaking industry in Thailand, has carefully guided awareness of eco-tourism, attempting to preserve the natural beauty he cherishes.

Cultural Experience

During our tour, we crafted our own Krathong to join the Krathong ceremony, decorating them with lotus leaves, incense, candles, and flowers. Following a delightful dinner, we paddled under starlit skies, where bioluminescent plankton sparkled with every movement.

It was Magical.

The night concluded with our boat dropping us off on a remote island, setting us up for a camping experience amidst one of Thailand’s stunning karst islands.
