An Alaskan cruise is on many person’s lists of dream vacations. There are numerous cruise lines in Alaska to choose from. We sought a journey that offered unique experiences away from the usual routes, and the small ship cruise with UnCruise Adventures fulfilled that desire.

Having traveled to Alaska multiple times on larger ships and land tours to popular ports such as Anchorage, Skagway, and Ketchikan, we were eager for a fresh perspective. Wildlife Encounters

We boarded the S.S. Legacy in Juneau, accompanied by 80 other passengers. The camaraderie quickly developed among us, as the UnCruise Adventures crowd is friendly, well-traveled, and eager to explore the great outdoors together.

The reality of a small number of passengers meant that we bonded quickly, engaging in lively conversations. During cocktail hour, we mingled, setting the tone for an unforgettable week in Alaska.

Flexible Routes and Access to More Sights

During our introduction and safety briefing, Captain Tim informed us of his decision to alter our route, taking the ship directly to Glacier Bay due to favorable weather conditions. Glacier Bay, a national park and preserve spanning over 3.3 million acres, became our primary focus.

We had the unique advantage of a small ship, allowing us to navigate deeper into the bay, reaching locations that larger ships couldn’t. Experiencing smaller fjords, hidden coves, and stunning glaciers was a highlight of our journey.

While many cruise lines may appear economical initially, hidden fees can accumulate quickly from beverages to activities and excursions. In contrast, the price point with UnCruise Adventures may seem higher upfront but encompasses everything upon arrival.

Unlike typical cruises where partying may dominate, on an UnCruise, guests enjoy an open bar throughout the day. Cocktails and discussions about the day’s adventures abound as everyone gathers for happy hour before dinner.

Every day, we had access to a variety of exciting excursions included in our package. Activities such as kayaking, skiff tours, beach walks, bushwhacking, whale watching, and glacier visits provided opportunities to connect with Alaska’s pristine wilderness.

Kayaking

Exploring Alaska’s stunning coastlines by kayak was a highlight of our trip. One memorable day, we encountered humpback and minke whales just beyond our paddles, alongside eagles and vibrant seabirds.

Skiff Tours

Covering more ground on a zodiac allowed us to embark on exciting wildlife encounters. One day, we found ourselves surrounded by a pod of whales, witnessing their captivating movements up close.

Beach Walks

Beach walks offered a fantastic way to explore tidal pools. Observing the rich marine life during low tide and the spectacle of two bald eagles engaged in a dramatic display showcased the wealth of life present in Alaska.

Polar Plunge

If you’re adventurous, participating in the polar plunge can provide bragging rights for years to come. A perfect way to challenge yourself amid breathtaking surroundings!

Cultural Experience at Bartlett Cove

Visiting Bartlett Cove allowed us to engage with the local culture by exploring the Huna Tribal House, a site that honors the connection between the Tlingit People and the National Park services. Witnessing the artistry of the carvings and the history surrounding the area deepened our appreciation for Alaska’s heritage.

As we reflect on our incredible week with UnCruise Adventures in Alaska, we fondly remember the friendships forged with fellow travelers and the unforgettable experiences shared among breathtaking landscapes.
